A big engine with a stock tranny beefed up and a 3.23 or 2.94 gear would be fun on the street and much cheaper than low gears and an OD of some sort.
I want my fair share

Yeah, but a big inch engine with steep gears would just be ridiculous on street tires...

Stock stroke 440, edelbrock rpm or 440source stealth heads, lunati voodoo 60304 or comp xe285hl, eddy rpm intake, holley 850dp, 4.10 rear gear and a 3000rpm or higher stall converter will get you into the 11's with ease and put out around 550hp. If you go with the CNC ported version of the heads and step up a little in cam you should be able to do near 600hp.
Very close to my 440 but I use the MP .557 solid cam and 906 iron heads I ported. It has got me a best of 11.49 in my full body 63 Sport Fury and it is 10.0 comp that runs on 92 pump. I am guessing about 500 hp to push my 3700 lb 63 to mid 11's. With CNC Eddy's it should make a good bit more hp then mine. Ron

for a cruiser, I'd probably look at 2.94's or so gears, a good higher stall, but tight converter, ported eddy heads, hydraulic roller cam with about 235-240@.050 and .550-.560 lift, and a 4.15" stroke crank....

Get a 440 or 400 and stroke it. Buy any aluminum heads and have them gone through well. Get a big card and have the distributer curved. Run with 3:55 gears and get a trans from John Cope as someone else suggested. My engine is around what you are trying to build and it is very streetable. You don't need anything exotic to make that power with 500 cubes. Run a good fan and radiator and make sure the cooling system flows. Make sure the valve train is dead on and you will have a street car that makes silly power
