Well im thinking about pulling my #'s matching drivetrain and building a big block with an auto behind it. Im looking for input on what specs you would go with to obtain 550hp/600ft lbs (or thereabouts) to cruise-how would you build it specifically?

I figure id get a built 727 as well. Who can build a turnkey 727 to handle that mild power?

Just looking for input now to get it on paper and maybe tinker with it. Im tired of tinkering with the original drivetrain and piece-mealing stuff.

good point, id probably rebuild the stock one under there- what do you think? It is original- currently has 3.55's in it.

I'm running just what you describe in the Satellite. It's a 440 stroker with the 440 Source 4.15" kit, displacing just under 500 CI. Eddy heads, old style Torker manifold (I had it), Holley 850 DP, Comp XS274S cam 236/242 @.050", .502"/.511" lift. Exhaust is 2" TTI's. The motor made 505 HP and 603TQ on the dyno.

The transmission is a CRT "Pro Street" 727 with reverse manual VB. I highly recommend giving John Cope at CRT a call. You wont find a better person to deal with and this trans works great!

hey thanks man!

how streetable is the build? how hot does it get in traffic? Anything different you would change if you had to do it again? Who built your motor? Did CRT?

I did a 505 BB using a Source 4.25 crank and a 440+.030 for a customer about a year ago using Stealth heads (I prefer Edelbrock)and a hyd. roller cam. It made 615TQ and 535HP and idled around 750-800rpm!

I wrote a whole book on that subject!

I have a motor like that getting ready to go to the dyno right now. 440 with 4.250 crank, ported Edelbrock heads, hyd roller camshaft, dual quad intake with twin 500 cfm carbs. This motor will be for sale once we finish dialing it in on the dyno.

How about overdrive? Behind a big high torque 500 it would quiet things down, extend the life of your engine and save some fuel, especially if you will be getting out on the highway.

A Gear Vendors behind a 727 or the Keisler OD automatic would fit the bill.

would you go GV or Keisler?

Both are great options. The gear vendors is well proven and the Keisler is shorter and lighter. In terms of cost, by the time you buy a well built 727 plus the GV unit I'm not sure there is much difference.

I went with a 5 speed Keisler manual behind a 550 ish HP 496 low deck. I love it.

You need a much more agressive cam. I bet you can pull alot more hp with a bigger cam. Very nice car. Ron

I like the bigger is better approach. We built a 523 (4.350x4.375) 440 with regular port victors and a victor intake. Hydraulic roller cam in the 250 @ .050 range. 10.5:1 and it made 640 hp and 650 tq. Going into a challenger. I expect it'll make a great street motor. Power's all done by 6200 rpm.

Stock stroke 440, edelbrock rpm or 440source stealth heads, lunati voodoo 60304 or comp xe285hl, eddy rpm intake, holley 850dp, 4.10 rear gear and a 3000rpm or higher stall converter will get you into the 11's with ease and put out around 550hp. If you go with the CNC ported version of the heads and step up a little in cam you should be able to do near 600hp.

I think if you run a big engine you can get away with a stock transmission. The idea of the stroke is to make a torque monster streeter that can pull hard with say 3.23 or 2.94 gears. It works for me with my 471 incher and 3.23 gears anyway. I've thought of changing to 2 series gears but the car cruises great at 80-90 MPH with the 3.23's and I need my driver's license.

I think my original 727 needs rebuild soon. I just went to the gas station and I took off pretty hard and it went, "shift, shift" into 3rd within seconds. Plus i dont get that "seat of the pants" shift.
