Just recently installed a 472 Hemi in my 1965 Belvedere I. I used the Schumacher Conversion Mounts and the TTI 2 1/8" chrome plated headers. The front of the mini starter that I used almost touches or possibly does touch one of the header tubes ( there is not any room to see for sure ). I do not know the manufacturer or model number of the mini starter as the label providing that information is long gone. With the engine hot, when I try to start the engine, I get a brief hesitation from the time that I turn the key until the starter engages. This does not occur when the engine is completely cold, so I am assuming that the starter is absorbing heat from the header since the two are so close. QUESTION: Does Mopar or anyone else make a mini starter heat shield ? Since I am sure that I am not the first to encounter this problem, does anyone have any thoughts or a solution on how they cured this problem.

Thanks Moparts...

I found a starter heat shield wrap at my local NAPA store. I found it on their web sight and called them in the morning with the part number and then picked it up on my way home that afternoon.

Thanks Dave,
Do you remember the manufacturer and the part number ? I assume that you wrapped the starter, not the header with this heat shield wrap, correct ?
Thanks again...

I have had exactly the same problem with both my '65 Coronet big block and my '65 Dart small block. Both have mini starters from 440 source. On the big block I put a short piece of split heater hose between the starter stud and the block for insurance. I built my own heat shields fron thin sheet aluminum, thought that would solve the problem, but still have the problem on both cars. The Dart is race only, and it is so bad that it won't crank if I shut it off in the pre stage area. I am going back to a stock starter in that one, but a stocker won't fit my big block with the headers that I have.

Thanks Dave,
I sincerely appreciate your help. I will call my local NAPA store tomorrow. Two ( 2 ) more questions... How effective was this and was it used on a mini starter ?
Thanks again...

I don't have any actual results, but adding a thermal barrier between the starter and the header sure seems like a good move to me. I only have maybe 3/8" clearance at the tightest spot, so this cover has to help a little at least. I only had a few drives with it on and even then the outside temps were only in the 60-75 range.
EDIT: Yes it was on a mini starter.

Yeah thats the one I used- it is a fiberglass blanket (asbestos?) that velcros around the starter. It solved my starter heat problems for good.

let us know how it works out for ya
