I finally completed the swap from my race 727 to a stock '65 727 in my '65. I used the downshift (throttle pressure) rod from the original 1965 273/904 setup. Just had to tweak the bends a bit because of the 1970 six pack setup being taller than the 273 2bbl. Adjusted everything per the service manual to basically where the throttle starts moving the transmission rod as soon as the throttle starts moving open. My question is: at full throttle, there is still room for the transmission rod to move further before it stops. Is this the norm? I never have figured why the trans rod is slotted at the carb attachment point.

Normally the lever on the trans should be all the way back or almost all the way back a wide open throttle.

I can tell you from recent experience, if it isn't all the way back at full throttle, it won't down shift.

That slot should be on a threadded rod. If you can't unthread it far enough to push the rod back all the way, it is too short. People weld on pieces to make it longer if they can't find one the right size.

I went looking for the 64 piece since it is adjustible.

Do you have the small spring pulling the linkage slot forward to the throttle pin on the carb so that the rear of the slot in the linkage is in constant contact with the throttle throughout the entire movement of the throttle. Number 13 in the picture. Representaive picture- yours may be slightly different but will still need the spring to pull the linkage forward to the throttle pin.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

The linkage is pulled forward to the throttle pin, but the trans rod spring goes toward the front of the engine and the carb return spring goes to the back of the engine. Like in the drawing, at rest, there is no clearance between the throttle pin and the rear edge of the trans linkage slot. The concern is that at full throttle, I can still push the trans linkage at least 1/4" further back.

1/8in. (+/-) is acceptable. lengthen the linage out by turning the turnbuckle a couple of turns. Is the throttle pressure kicking downa dn are the shift points approx correct?? If so no big deal. All adjustment are variable upon application.

Just adjust it for wide open throttle with the transmission lever bottomed out.

If the partial throttle shifts are ok after that call it done.

The slot is for safety reasons. If anything holds the kickdown linkage open. You can still release the throttle and the throttle can close.

hello all.

i am having downshift troubles with my 64 D100 with a 440 and a 727 push-button 727.

i have all the linkage set up similar to the illustrations above with a slotted rod and pull spring but i can not get it to downshift on its own at WOT.

short of pulling the pan and taking a peek inside i can't think why it is not downshifting.

please help!

Ben

If the transmission will kickdown from 3rd to 2nd at 40 mph with WOT don't worry about the amount of linkage travel left at WOT.
