Thanks Barry but this is odd because I always thought the upper doors looked plain black. I need to take a closer look. Also my original seat covers look like the inserts are faded charcoal but the tag says black.

Upper door frame paint - Charcoal

Which came that way when V24 Hood treatment was ordered.

The C55 should just show buckets and not the color of the seats on the tag. build sheet should show colors and insert color. The 5x8 reads as charcoal, but i was told this was a typo of sorts from chrysler and it should be black , i've never seen a charcol painted door. BTW my car is a black bucket with charcoal insert, but cant tell what the upper door was, it was painted semi flat in the late 70's. this is for a 71 demon so not sure if its the same

AFAIK the Charcoal uper door frame paint was a Duster only addition, part of the package when ordering the V24 Hood blackout with 340 Wedge callout. The hood, tops of the fenders, tops of the doors, and part of the forward quarter/roof was painted in organisol blackout. The charcoal UDF paint was supposed to be a styling cue with the blackout outside upper door paint. Since Demons did not have the blackout upper (outside) door paint, they didn't have the inside charcoal paint either.

In 1971 the silver/grey inserts were available on buckets and split bench seats with the fold down armrest, it was referred to as the "Deluxe" vinyl interior. This had nothing to do with the UDF paint.

That clears it up a bit, but i have the 5x8 on my tag so i'm guessing it was a miss stamp and should be a 5x9 for black. I was told this was a common code on demon darts ect..

No build sheet but L6X9 would be blk bucket right? and an L6XA would be blk/charcoal seat. My seat inserts are a lighter blk but are very brittle, crummy and faded, maybe when they are removed a trim tag is present inside?.... I looked at my rear upper doors this morning and they lool like a satin dirty black. I am used to 69 b bodies which are gloss black, could it be that 5X8 ment satin and X9 is gloss? Hope I can find the proper paint code pretty soon as my doors, hood, deck lid, fenders are at the body shop and I hope to have the unibody there by spring. I will be sending the thermoquad to Harms as we get closer. Want a factory correct resto. This car is long over due!

Correct, the X8 is the code for the sooty looking black you describe. It's sort of a satin black, "charcoal" may lead some to think "Gray" but it's black, just a dull finish instead of gloss.

I am away from my office until Monday and don't remember the seat cover codes without checking my materials to confirm, I'll let you know when I get back.

Thanks Barry, according to the 71 fleet book, the duster black buckets coded L6X9 look to have charcoal inserts. That explains my seats. I got that XA code from my old 1991 Hembree Decoding Guide which may have some misinformation. Tim

thanks Barry, my M6X9 fender tag shows black/charcoal on the 71 dodge dart trim. My upper doors are a semi to flat black also with a code 5x8, I always assumed someone painted it but maybe not?? was the gloss black Tx9 ??? Maybe demons & dusters that had the flat hood paint treatment also got the 5x8 flat blk UDF.
