A friend is wanting to trade a 518 to some parts I have. Its a pre 96 lockup tranny. One thing im concerned about is the slap stick shifter I just installed in my cuda. Is it possible to use this or do I have to use a different shifter? Id really like to keep it if possible and mount the OD on/off button somewhere on the console possibly.
Another question... he doesnt know how many miles are on the transmission or if its ever been rebuilt. What can I look for to tell if it needs rebuilt prior to installing it? Or should I just rebuild it anyways. If so Id like to try rebuilding it myself since Ive always wanted to learn this.

I don't think you'll be able to use that shifter as there is no place to mount the trans bracket on the 518. You would also have to do some cut and replacement of the floor tunnel to get it to fit and you'll need to build a crossmember.

You don't need to cut the tunnel, you do need to fabricate a new croosmember & if your willing to do the work the shifter can be converted to cable shift..

What Stumpy said. Also if you decide to go with the 518 just rebuild it rather than betting on an unknown condition. I've only done a 727 but there is supposedly a nasty 800lb pressure spring in the OD unit that has to be handled properly or it can cause personal injury. Hopefully someone else will jump in here with more info.
