Trying to make sure my rings are gapped right. Had them done at the machine shop where I had the block work done. They are total Seal file-fit rings, PN CR3690 65. I was measuring one of the second rings, and it was .015. Total seal says multiply the bore X .0035 (second ring), which comes out to .0142 (4.060 bore). So .015 is ok, but then there's a note saying that for every .001 over stock bore, add .0035. That would give me a gap of something like .8, which obviously makes no sense. What should my gap be? Haven't even measured the top ones yet, but I'm sure the same goes.

you read the "note" wrong. please read that section again.
for every .001 of overbore, it will add approximately .0035 of ring gap.
in other words, right now the gap is .015" if you were to hone .001 out of the bore right now, it would make the gap wider by approximately .0035

Ok, so in other words, it's saying that if you use rings that were gapped for a 4.040 bore and they had a .015" gap, then those same rings would have a .0185 gap if the bore was 4.041. Is that right?

So .015 is correct for a 4.060 bore, if the gap is supposed to be .0035 X Bore.?

Are the Total Seal second rings there gapless or thier standard type ring? What did the machine shop set the top ring gap at? If I was building that motor for street or street and strip i would probally set the top ring gap at .018 to .020 (depending on the fuel used and application, looser for street on pump gas)and the second ring gap at .020 to .022.

yes, that is correct, for both questions.

Just remember, one little error such as a belt comming off, and you might have wished you gaped the rings on the large side of the spec.

It's their standard file-fit rings. Using the formula, the gap comes out to .015, which is what the shop set them at, but I'm thinking I'd rather have them at about .018. .015 is a tiny gap. I'd have to double check, but I think bot top and second have the same ring gap factor.

the top ring should be gapped at .0045 per inch of bore for a naturally aspirated engine with no power adders.
the 2nd gap doesn't "need" to be as wide since it see's considerably less heat from combustion and therefore will not expand as much.

I'm with Dram on this one. All of the charts I've seen use .0045 for the ring gap factor.

Gap the second ring using the same formula as the top ie: bore x .005" , you're engine won't mind a little more end gap ,plus the top ring will thank you for it.
