I'm running the Purple Stripe .474/.471, 280 duration,....340/6 4spd 3.91 gears,...the motors dynoed 443 HP usual goodies in the rebuild, 11 to 1 compression revs freely to 6500, but I try to keep it under 6000,....this cam/engine combo comes on strong around 3000 RPM on up,...not bad idle, rather choppy, I idle around 1200 RPM, but it sounds more like 600RPM, it that lopey I run a Mallory YL dual point reverse rotation Marine distributor with mechanical advance that holds the advance plate stationary until approx 2000 RPM, the advance plate is keyed for 28 degrees all in by 2000-2500 RPM, I run 10 BTDC initial, this set up gives the motor a good launch off the line, really puts the power down fast Mike

Do they make the same cam for a '98 360 roller block? If I had to, I could go with a earlier timing cover and use the longer cam with the fuel pump excentric, but want to keep the roller, in the setup. This cam sounds like exactly what I want/need. Any part numbers for it?

you could run the flat tappet in the roller block. personally I'd either regrind the roller cam, or pick up something like a comp XE268HR.
pick up a used roller cam out of an 80's 318, send it to bullet cams, and see if they can put their HR280/320 or HR274/325 lobe intake and exhaust on it....

Read my post above,.....it really likes a four gear! pulls extremely strong in the 3-6K range,,,,,makes for a brutal assult on the driveline, I've popped about (3) 8 3/4 carriers, 3.55-3.91's racing, I'm running a Hemi 4spd and an 11" Hays BorgBeck 2800 lb pressure plate and a Kelvar disc behind my 340/6, I used to run a 3400 lb McLeod, but that was a bear on the streets, nevermind my leg! ..Steve..you have some experience with the comp XE268.How do they compare? I'm thinking with a gear the .474 might E.T. better and the 268 would help a low compression engine and have better bottom end. What's the least gear you would expect the .474 to like with a 4 speed,3.55?..my 3.23's are shot? .. .al
Well, let me tell you exactly how they compare. The XE268 has a modest lope and decent vacuume for the street. The Hemigrind has a chop that has a meaner sound but less vacuume. As far as peak power and rpm, they are pretty close; this would make a good dyno test but I would guess they are within a few HP. Both are very good street cams and will pull strong to 6000+ in a 340. -dulcich

I still run that cam in my 340. Got nothing bad to say about it. I run about 18 degrees of inital timing and it has great manners for the street.Sounds great at idle.
Idles at 800 rpm all day long.
