Thinking of upgrading the fuel system on my Duster. It is 418 ci. with ported eddy heads. It has an Air Gap intake with a 750 Holly carb. I instaled a 3/8 pick up and fuel lines. Currently I am using a mechanical Carter pump. I have been told numerous times that I will not have enough fuel at the top end. Does someone make a better mechanical pump or should I change to electric? All advice is appreciated.

There are numerous mechanicals pumps made for Hi Po applications, the one true way to test your fuel delivery sstem is to be able to fatten the jetting up enough to make the car slow down in the 1/4 mile on the MPH. You can also try installing one or more new spark plugs and go out where it is safe enough to floor the car in high gear for a 1/8 mile or more in high gear and then stop the car as soon as possible and pull that plug and take a good hard look at it, richen the jetting up again until it makes the plug readings start looking rich. If you can't fatten the jets up big enough to make the plugs read rich your running out of fuel in high gear. BTW, if it starts popping or missing or noses over let out of the throttle and fix the fuel system Another BTW, if you have to add a electric pump buy one way bigger than just big enough to handle what you got now, you know you may want more power later

Add a fuel pressure gauge (0-15 psi) (w an isolator) to your dash & see what your psi is at the top end. Need at least several psi.

Listen to cab and overbuild your fuel system so you only do it once. Then fuel delivery will never be part of diagnostic session.

which carter fuel pump?
For street use the mechanical will be quieter, but may vapor lock. With todays junk pump gas you almost have to run some sort of vapor return/bypass line back the the tank to prevent vapor lock.
The electric pumps are nice for performance, but usually they are noisy, and cost more than the mechanical pumps.

I run a very similar engine combo with 3/8" pick-up and lines. Since I do a fair amount of engine work / changes / mods, I decided to eliminate the mechanical pump from the equation. If you will be running in the mid 11's, you are gonna need enough fuel supplied to the carb to fill a one gallon can in 30 seconds or under. This test might seem crude ( and a little difficult to run with a mechanical pump - gotta set up an outside fuel source )considering all the data out there, but it seperates all the BS from how much juz your carb is actually receiving from the pump source. Having a fuel gauge is almost mandetory also - to know where you are at. I run a very simple dead head system. Holley 150 pump located by the tank ( run power directly from my trunk mounted battery through a relay )pumps through an inline filter ( along the frame rail ), regulator on the firewall and to the carb. Got more than enough fuel an 11 second car.
