I am looking to purchase a 70 440-6 Roadrunner. What should the engine pad at the front and the lower pad read so you know you are getting an original 440-6 car? I know the lower pad should have the last 6 digits of the cars vin, but are there any letters in front to designate that it is a 440-6pk car? The data plate shows it was built 2/22/1970. What would be correct for the engine assembly date? Thanks!

The engine stampings do not tell you what the car originally came with, the car's VIN tells you what engine it is supposed to have, in this case the code for a 440-6 barrel engine , Plymouth's term , is the letter "V".

The engine stampings will tell you what the engine is built and if it has the cars partial VIN it potentially was originally installed in the car you are looking at .

The last 8 digits of the vin should be stamped a the pan rail ex: 0A123456. These should match the VIN of the car. The top pad of the engine will have numbers similar to F 440 1 22 HP. The stamp/assembly date will likely be within a few weeks prior to the SPD of the car. So in this case you are probably looking for a stamp date between 1 22 & 2 15. Please note that these comments are general and should not be assumed to be correct all of the time. I have a 70 440 car with a SPD date of 2/27/70 the stamp date on the engine is 2 9. I hope this helps!!!

Thanks for the advise. I probably need to stick with what I know about A12 cars. Anyway do the 70 440 6pk runners have the vin stamped on the radiator support and trunk lip like the 69 1/2 cars?

Partial VIN is stamped on the trunk lip and rad support just like the engine. In my case its 0AXXXXXX with the XXXXXX = the sequential serial number.

You've gotten some very good answers to your questions so far.

My advice would be to check the VIN 1st (making sure it looks unaltered with the correct rosette rivits).

Then check the fender tag to make sure it matches; post a pic here to determine it's originality and to help with a decode.

Check for the partial VIN on the trunk lip and the rad support. Trunk lip one is likely under the weatherstripping and the rad one might be between the rad and the support so take tools!

Check the door sticker just to confirm (if it's still there)

Check the motor for the correct stamp (HP or HP2) along with an appropriate assy date. Again post pics if you want confirmation that it looks unmessed with. Check the pan rail for the partial VIN....again with the pics.

...unless you have access to the BS, that should about do it.

If you think you know about 69.5 A12 cars then I'm confused why you asked the question the way you did ...
