im finshing the resto on my ta, i replace the u-joint which fit perfect into the drive shaft, however, when i went to install the drive shaft and connect to the dana 60 yoke, it seems that i need a larger cap on the u-joint to fit properly. anyone ever had this issue and if so, whats the solution? do i need to change the yoke? is there a u-joint available with different size caps?any help is highly appreciated. thank you

you need a 7260 to 7290 conversion u-joint available at o'reilly's, auto zone, napa etc...

From Greg Lewallen's guide to the 8 3/4, alot of this info works for Dana 60's

Quote:

The 8-3/4" axle was offered with two size cross & roller style universal
joint. These are referred to as the '7260' (2-1/8" yoke ID) and the '7290'
(2-5/8" yoke ID). Most Imperials and some C-bodies used a different univer-
sal joint. The '1330' type joint was used on Imperials and others with a
constant velocity joint. The '1330' uses outside snap rings instead of the
inside snap rings used by the '7269' and '7290'. The cap diameter for the
'7260' is 1.078". The cap diameter for the '7290' is 1.126". The '1330'
style joint cap diameter is 1.063".

Moog (Precision) part # for conversion joint is 347

TRW (Federal-mogul) part # for conversion joint is 20226

I am not familiar with dana rear ends at all, but if it helps any....

T/A driveshafts have a small u-joint in front & big one in the rear.

I just bought a u-joint from Napa that fits the 7260 on one end and the 1350 on the other end.I don,t have the part # ,but they can find what you need.I beleive it cost about $31.00.

I hate to seem stupid here, but I have never seen a drive shaft with two different size joints. I have never owned a T/A but I have had an AAR since 76 and the driveshaft it in has both ends the same. I was an auto and I changed it to a 4 speed. I'll have to check my car and measure the joints to be sure, but I remember changing the joints years ago and I had no issues.

They were used on some non-trans am E-bodies as well.

This is exactly how my T/A drive shaft is. It has a small joint on the front and large joint on the rear.

Well I have learned to never say never, and on this board you can get a good tongue lashing sometimes for that. I did look in the parts book and it did show some E body 340 cars with the small u joints. Of course in the application section it showed for 2 u joints of the same part number to be used in all applications. I went to the dealership back in the early 80's and bought three brake boosters for a 71 e body with 340 and 3 X 2 carbs and they acutally came in, part number and all. 25 bucks each I could not go wrong, now if I could just find one of those mysterious 71 T/As to put them on, I'd be set!

I don't think T/A or AAR e-bodies would have ever been equipped with a Dana 60. You said resto. Did you 'Upgrade'?

I have had more than one T/A and one AAR, never saw or heard of a original T/A or AAR that came with a Dana 60 from the factory, maybe dealer installed but not factory As far as the driveshafts, the factory would install what they had in stock in the T/A and the AAR, those cars where very limited production and weren't real popular or real powerful
