Fellas -

Wondering how many cubes I can get out of my 426 hemi. It's an over the counter Mopar block; likely cast in 2006 or so. May go through it this winter and thinking about a new rotating assembly.

Thanks in advance for any info,

Scott

Ok, maybe I wasn't specific enough...if I bore and stroke it, what is the max cubes combination of bore and stroke?

Thanks,

Scott

You can get stroker kits up to 600 cubic inches for it but there will be machine work required. Indy cylinder heads provide these kits and some other vendors. Pretty costly though.

Ok, I checked Indy's site. 605" or so sounds good to me. How much work is involved fitting a 4.5 or 4.75 crank in the stock block? Grinding needed for rod bolt clearance?

I'm assuming that the block should take a 4.500 bore, too, but are most blocks good for this or is this really dependent on the sonic check? Does this leave me any room for a rebuild/overbore?

Thanks!

Scott

It depends on which block you have. There are 2 versions of the hemi blocks...one that can go to 4.5" bore (megablock) and another that really shouldn't go any further than 4.31" (replacement block). You still need to have it sonic checked to see how thick it is. CHIP

Any way to identify which block I have?

Thanks,

Well, First off if you call Indy they will tell you what kind of machine work is required. And as far as ID on the block I'm not sure on that never had the pleasure of owning a Hemi. But it would be good practice to sonic check the block.

Sonic check. My '66 block is maxed at .065 over. Cylinder wall strength is worth more than maxing out the bore anyway.
At 438", my car doesn't have a prayer of hooking up on street tires anyway.

E mailed Indy. They didn't answer on machine work, but said they thought that I had a stock replacement block with a max bore of 4.375 (have to sonic check) with max cubes at 540.

Yeah, wasn,t sure if you needed a special block for that 600 cubes. And if you don,t need a special block then it may require a lot of machine work.

To put more than 4.15 worth of stroke in it generally means the stock oil pickup has to go, no room.

Take care,

That's easy. Feathers obviously weigh less than stones. Next question please.

Wasn't there a block with a raised cam for large stroke engines?

yes and he would need it to go as big on the stroke that he wants .

on the block he has , more than likely a water block , should have had a yellow sticker on the bellhousing flange telling you max overbore , mine i am pretty sure says 4,340 , maybe it's 4.310 I'd haveto drag it out to look .

I wouldn't max bore it , then it's got no lives left .
