i have the smoothest running roadrunner ever made...starts with 2 pumps of the gas, great car...until about a month ago...crusing at 40mph in 4th gear, when the car 'bucked' for a sec... then was driving normally for a few miles, when it happened again, this time really coughing/spudering, feathered the gas, and it finally returned to normal and took it home. afterwards the car would not start. i did get it to start by pourin some gas into the carb, but it only stayed started for a mom, and ran like 'poop', and when it stopped, a large cloud of fuel came back thru the carb... looked like a nuclear cloud.

thinking it was the carb, had it rebuilt, still would not start. also changed the plugs, which were very wet. did get it started , and it seemed to run fine for about a min, then just died..and could not restart it.

so i changed the rotor and the cap, and it started with 2 pumps of the gas, running fine. pulled out of the garage onto the street and it again started to spudder/cough and then it died .. again with a large plume of gas thru the carb.

i will change the condenser, but i do not think thats the problem... any brite ideas??

thanks

Unhook the gas line at the carb and crank over and see if it is pumping gas. Make sure that you have a clean fuel filter, sock on tank pick up tube plugged, make sure that there is gas in the tank.

she is getting plenty of gas as i did exactly what u are saying last week. the fuel filter is brand new, there is plenty of gas in the tank...

she is getting plenty (too much??) of fuel , cause when she shuts down, there is a fuel cloud blowback thru the carb.
thanks

Points or electronic distributor? Sounds like a this could be your problem or the ignition box.

First, try to verify timing. Maybe the chain slipped, or the points/pickup went bad. Etc, but check that first.

Second, on the carb, check to make sure that the float isn't stuck or filled or that there isn't something hanging the needle up. All of these could cause an over rich condition.

But my guess is that something went bad. Loose wire? Coil?

You say the carb is supplying plenty or too much gas - well that being the case you also contridicted that be saying that it started and ran by pouring gas into the carb and it died when that supply ran out.
It is very doubtful if it is the timing chain or ignition (possible but) when you say that it will start and tempararly run when gas is poured into the carburator.

we poured gas a number of times in the carb, and it would not start. once tho my buddy poured some gas in the carb, it started rite up, idles for about 1min at around 1800rpm, and then suddenly died. my buddy looked at me (i was in the drivers seat) and asked what had i done. i told him i was not doing anything, i did not even touch the gas... it was running, then it just stopped... and it would not restart even when we added gas into the carb.

as i said , i changed the rotor+cap yesterday, and with 2 pumps on the gas, it started up as it always did prior to the problem.

same thing this morn.. 2 pumps started up, idled for about 20/30secs, backed it out of the driveway, but once i put it into 1st and gave it a bit of gas... the coughing/spuddering started, and no amount of feathering the petal helped.. and when it quits, there is that large plume/cloud of gas from the carb.
