It will be interesting to see if this concept brings in more fans than competition runs do. It amounts to match racing and fireworks.

Their statement "... a reduction in the number of days spent at the track and an emphasis on all things entertainment" pretty much sums it up: Less competition, more show.

What I'm wondering about is how the major pro-class teams responded to this idea...

Sadly it sounds like they are cheapening their version of "pro drag racing" down to the level of monster truck "races".

NHRA is probably jumping for joy.

I don't know...to my mind Pro racing has become nothing more than a dog and pony show anyway....especially fuel.

The days are long gone when the number of fuel cars that can support two sanctioning bodies even exist. The numbers aren't there. And, the majority of ones that are heavy hitters have some sort of an exclusivity contract with NHRA anyway.

On top of that, NHRA has made attending a National event incredibly costly. If you want to take your spouse, and eat and sleep in some sort of civilization, prepare to shell out some big bucks and think about maybe skipping your mortgage for the next month or two.

This may, may just open up an avenue for some budget fuel cars to come into existence. And, seeing how the majority of fuel "fans" are there for the noise and smoke anyway, the reasonable prices and the attraction of still being able to buy groceries might just pay off.

Besides, they haven't messed with the "real racers", the rank and file who do this out of passion and not sort of business.

I think it is a novel idea....and it may pay off.

They're leaving the Sportsman classes alone, that's all I care about. I don't go to see TF, FC, PM, etc. I go to see Super Stock and Stock.

Yeah, great, they are leaving the sportsman classes alone. However, if the "booked in" pro show stinks, or the format can't draw a crowd, there won't be any IHRA to worry about going to after a short while. I hope for the sake of those who run IHRA that it works out, but I don't have much confidence in anything that comes from the "fertile" mind of Aaron Polburn.

If they're getting paid I think the response will be positive especially considering how much they might be able to save. How many motors do they waste in qualifying?

If it pays and people come to watch it'll work.

You do realize the IHRA is owned by Feld entertainment right? If you are aware of that small fact you (like I did) should of seen it coming.

Combining all they have learned with monster trucks and the circus.

UHRA back in biz? Gil Kohn did this in the 60's at Detroit Dragway.Matter of fact he did the 4 lane thing too. Guess Gil was way ahead of his time.

So how far into next year are we going to get before the NEW Ihra starts getting accused of using "Hot" clocks for the show part?

I think I would rather set through 6 or 7 hrs of race competition then set through 3 hrs of spark throwing school bus wheelies....

It's my guess that the major pro class teams have already spoken to the IHRA hence this decision.

Sportsman classes remain the same and a two day program instead of three....I like it and the fans will get the same pro show...only condensed into a shorter wait period....works for me

I've been to most of them, as a crewmember for my dad, as a racer, and as track announcer. It's a different thing completely. Plus, the IHRA is missing the most important thing...the Baders' showmanship and planning.
