what is the best way to restore my 68 coronet r/t door emblems, do i strip the paint off then go back all new , or do i try to salvage some of the original paint and just paint the black part of the emblem?

If this was for a driver I would suggest just a touch up, But with the extent of your resto I would think you want it to look as good as the rest of the resto.

A complete restoration of the part is my suggestion.

i am kinda of scared to mess with them, i pd over 250.00 for them, i really wanted a show condition look, i have over 20,000 in the car, i hate to skimp on this, since it will be very visual, how do i strip the piece? and where can i buy the paint to repaint? i figure i guess i could spray the black on the outside and that i wld have to hand paint the coronet and r/t, can you give me some direction on what to do?

Chemical stripper cleans them right up... Tightly mask & spray the large black area... Use a syringe to place paint in the letters.... Works excellent... Learned this technique when I was given a tour of the Trim Parts facility in Ohio

I dont have my car here to look at but I believe the silver is actually plating, correct?

If so there is not much you can do about that. The people that have worked on their dash bezels with the chrome paint pens have an advantage in that this door emblems are much larger and more difficult to refinish. I have tried some of the supposed chrome spray paint and was less than thrilled with the results.

you may be able to address everything except the silver. This would be an improvement on the driver condition of your parts.

I am lucky in that I do not have to address my emblems......yet!

good luck!

hey Dave,

the silver part of these emblems is actually in very good condition, i think if i strip the paint and spray the black and use the syringe trick it just may work, thanks for all the input

I used SEM Trim Black & I have a Diabetic Roommate so I used one of those tiny ones..
Practice on an old emblem... I liked the results so much I've redone emblems on my other car & for friends... Plus the NOS emblems I have for my 68...

I just cleanned mine real good with carb cleaner, wipe them off with thinner taped the inside off, sprayed with satin black. when the dried I took a razor blade and very easily scrape it along the outhside edge so chrome would show. removed tape on inner words, spray paint on paper abd with small model paint bruch painted the black letering, if I got out of line I wiped it off immediatley with carb cleaner on a rag. Heres a pic of some 500s I did. I think they look very good.

Hi Mike,

Is that just refinishing the paint work or will you restore the chrome plating as well?

I stripped mine with lacquer thinner and a very fine brass bristle toothbrush. Then masked off and sprayed the black portion. I used red and black testors model car paint (in the little bottles) and a very sharp pointed artists/model car paint brush from Hobby Lobby to the touch up the Coronet and R/T letters. I'll have to try the syringe trick though, that sounds a little easier/less time consuming.
