I know “some” racers will spend any amount, any time any place for almost any reason. Me on the other hand, I have to really be shown the $$ need to be spent and that there is no other alternative that will achieve the same or almost the same results for a lesser amount of money. Then are times like today that I just can not believe what I just spent hard earned cash on!! I needed a vent for my Alky tank and was told I needed the 8an size. So I go down to the "discount" liquidators and ask for 1 bulkhead connector, 1 90* hose fitting, and 3' of hose all 8an. The total came to $60!! I am sure I could have achieved the same results with $3 worth of home depot hardware, a piece of fuel line and a hose clamp!! Oh yea I needed to buy a nut for the bulkhead connector!! I am not sure why, cause the NUT was the one handing over his credit card!!

I agree with you whole heartedly. I look baakc on things in my car that were musts to make it run better and ET better. I can list about 1000$ or more of these that accomplished little or no gain waht so ever and what there was was so little that it sure wasn't worth the investment.

Another old saying is "If it don't go, chrome it!". I personally don't support paying thru the nose for bling-bling (or whatever they call it). The NHRA has a list of acceptable hoses that don't cost an unreasonable amount.

I was involved in ordering parts for a Nostalgia Pro Street Camaro a couple years ago. $1500 for titanium bolts to take 3 pounds off the car.

The car did set the record on motor only in a nitrous class though.

Ted, was that AN hose and fittings Teflon? I hope it was as it is a lot more money than the neopreme hose and fittings, but the Teflon is well worth the money It will not die young or come apart on you and it has a lot higher melting temps. and pressure rating than the same size neopreme Cheap and quality are not the same thing anywhere in business, racing, medicine and a lot of other things we deal with every day.

I bet I can guess pretty close

Yeah, when I started plumbing my engine I had to buy 20 AN fittings at almost $100 a fitting i was ready to

I guess it goes back to the old saying, if you wanna play you gotta pay.....

No I do agree to a point that if you want to play you have to pay!! But in my case, I think I really could have gotten away with $10 worth of parts and the result would be the same!! So was I stupid to spend the extra $50 to avoid looking mexicant, red neck, getto or whatever you want to call it. My Dad would have used the Home Depot parts and never given it a second thought!!

I hear what you are saying Ted. Sometimes I think we are just conditioned to think we have to have certain costly parts when in fact, they are just plain not necessary.

Our cost(not counting help from sponsors) to maintain our car this season was 5 thousand per month(parts only) with 2 months to go. There are cars in our class who's total was much higher. How fast do you want to go and how competitive do you want to be?

Went to Burns SS a few weeks back and got 2 4.5" SS mufflers. Then I picked up 2 4.5" SS turndowns. Total cost over 800 bucks. We used them for 2 races then did the exact same thing with 5 inchers. This stuff isn't even figured in the maint. costs. We've burned through 3 sets of headers this season. Average cost 2000 per set. We finally got some heavy wall SS headers that only cost us 3000 bucks. Do you know how much Racepak sensors cost? We have a drawer full of them just in case. Fuel pump cable drive. 900 bucks. We have 2. I could go on and on.
