My 1st run today didn't even get out of the burnout box

I know this is gonna be a stupid question. I believe I already know the answer but I figured Iwould ask anyway Tranny Should be taken out and checked? Has all the good stuff billet drum bolt in sprag low band apply valve body yada yada yada

The Drive shaft broke at about 4500 rpm just broke the straps and the mushroomed the ears on the pinion yoke I heard it let loose and killed it right away

I love cars

Did I say this was the 1st run of the year. plenty of street miles car shows and cruise nights

Sorry for the breakage but what was the question??

Do you have a pinion snubber on there?

I believe he is asking why the tranny should be pulled out and checked over because of the parts breakage but i could be wrong.

Yes, the Trans needs to be disassembled and checked
for sprag dammage.

He was asking IF the trans needs to come out to be checked.

Its just a matter of being sure its not broke, because if you damaged the sprag (which is possible when breaking a Diff/U-joint) then the trans can fail in spectacular fashion.

How much of a gambler are you?

Having a low band apply might have saved you.

Were you even in 1st gear when it broke?

Yes I was asking if it should be checked

it happened at low rpm
3500-4000

I was in 2nd gear Never do my burnouts in 1st then shift always left it in 2nd

I'm just being lazy

I'll have to pull the tranny

It should be fine. In 2nd gear the sprag isn't even holding.

Two things can happen when you break a rear U joint in 2nd or 3rd gear, the drive shaft can be bent as well as the output shaft in the tranny can bend It sure won't hurt to check the rear sprag also

In 2nd gear the low roller clutch is just along for the ride. I have 2 friends with high 10 low 11 second cars that went though a bunch of u-joint strap failures. It can be traced to 2 items. #1 over tightening of the u -joint strap bolts. Use a torque wrench one time and you will realize how much you have been over tightening those poor little 1/4" bolts. #2 If you have the stock mounts on your axle housing I can guarantee you don't have enough pinion angle. We repaired these and have not had a repeat failure since. My 11.0 3890 lb street car has never broke a strap. By the way it is a Volare.

I think my problem was the bolts just had enuff.

I overtightened them I'm sure

I snugged them up the other nite before loading the car

The drive shaft is junk it banged around in the DS loop and hit the muffler and with the yoke end

I think I'm gonna goto a dennnys nitrous shaft with all 1350 stuff chrome moly yokes

I know the pinion angle is where it needs to be I have cal tracs on the car and it is 3.5 down cal trac calls for 2 to 4

I raced this car a bunch of times last year the way it is only thing I did to the drive shaft was replace the u joints with solid ones

it wasn't violent at all it just spit it out

I'm just worried about the tranny

in the old days we would drill the yoke right through then use 1/4" grade 8 bolts nuts and washers 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 long much stronger than the threaded cap screws!

Put the yoke in the trans and turn it,it it has drag and takes a little effort to turn then you should be fine.

I talked to John at CRT I have his VB in the tranny among other things and explained what happened. told him what gear I was in he said it should be fine. said if I was in 2nd I should be good
if I was in 1st he said he would check it.

I'm gonna check the rear pumpkin

check the tranny like BG Racing said.

I think I'm gonna call Dennys and get one of there nitrous shafts with the 1350 stuff

thanks for the help
