I was timing the engine today and I was upset at a few things:
1) near impossible to reach the distributor hold down bolt to loosen or tighten it
2) spark timing jumping around significantly +/- 2 degrees off my mark
3) advance coming in way too late.

Between all the pains, I decided I really need to get my timing looked after, starting with a crank trigger. I hvae a stock block 360 rebuilt to 408. The crank damper is a Romac (I think) and the pulley is a two groove billet aluminum one from March performance.
Wht all is involved in makign the switch?
Do I end up offsetting all my pulleys?
Is there more than just MSD in the world of SB mopar crank triggers?

I just need the trigger to get timing, I'll control advance curve from the EFI computer so I assume I just lock out the advance in the distributor and phase it about right to line up at full advance?
Anything else I need to take into consideration here?

Greg

The MSD crank trigger works fine. You'll need to either space the other pulleys out or find a shorter crank pully. The distributor is just along to pass spark,I use a magnum distributor because its small and the cap uses hei style ends, but a lean burn or stocker with the advance locked will work.

Depending on what signal your ECU wants (didn't you have a home brew unit?) some of the megasquirt vendors have various ways to rig up a crank wheel. Here is a wheel at DIYautone:

DIYautotune

Then you need to mount a GM or Ford VR sensor to read the missing tooth on the wheel.

Yeah, mine is a complete design of my own. I can't recall the timing performance of interrupts, but I like the simplicity of the 4 flying magnet as opposed to dealing with the 36-1 or 60-2 wheels. The advantage fo the 4 flying magnets is I can trigger my existing ignition off it while I find time to deal with the programming side of driving that signal off my board.

I dislike the idea of having to space all my pulleys out to accomodate the MSD wheel. I'll have to look at what my options are when I get a free evening to spend at the car dreaming and scheming.
