Polished out the journals and a few of the journals have slight nicks on them.
Yes I can feel them with my fingernail.
How forgiving is this? The bearings looked OK that came out of it. 110,000 mile engine.
The crank journals were within spec sizes to run standards again. Building a street 440, nothing radical.
I hate to have it turned, chancing other problems later.
Feed back?
Thanks DJ

Have it turned,as when you don't it will come back to bite you. As I was always told by my dad "do it right the first time and you won't have to do it again." Besides bearings aren't that expensive.

You say that you can feel with your finger nail. Can you feel them above the crank journal surface or are they below the surface with no protruding edges? If they are below the journal surface (like a mini dent) with no edges above the smooth surface - not to worry. If there are dedges above the surface then the edges should be smoothed out.

Nicks below the surface, not protruding. I dont know where they came from? From factory back in 1972? I handled the crank like it was made of glass, paid special attention not to bump it with anything.
I havent built any confidence with the machinist Im working with so I cant say how good or poor he may be, thats why Id rather not turn it.

Don't think of them as nicks, think of them as oil reservoirs.

I barked a rod journal pretty hard installing pistons in a 440. Took a point file and dressed the nick so it was flush with the journal and then did a little polishing with wet-or-dry and put it together. Still together after 6 years.

If you do decide to run it, I'd go with a HV oil pump for some extra peace of mind.

If its an "inny" don't worry about it. If its an "outy" some fine crocus cloth...

Not a real big deal unless its an outy.....

Like said above hit it with a fine point file to just get the edges smoothed down to the rest of the surface. It is stated that it is already polished and further polishing with crocus cloth wil take as much off the rest of the shaft as the nick or if just hitting th earea of the nick it is possible to create a flat spot that is not wanted. A small file is not flexible and easier to control to just ake off the above surface edges.
