It is a interference engine. I have got lucky and replaced the broken belt without valve damage.

Yeah they are.If the belt broke and didnt ding the valves you better buy a lottery ticket.Last one we had in blew the belt idling and bent 4 valves.Ive even seen some people bend valves replacing the belt.Rocky

Well it's a non interference motor in the sense that it won't bend the valves hitting pistons but the valves can actually bend by hitting each other by the cams spinning independently of each other.

From page 9-153:

The engine is free-wheeling; meaning it has provisions
for piston-to-valve clearance. However valve-to-valve
interference can occur, if camshafts are rotated
independently.
