I am considering trading my 1/2 ton pickup for a 3/4 ton van.
Anyone tow with a 3/4 ton van? If so, how does it tow? What kind is it and what does it get for fuel economy towing and unloaded?
I tow an open trailer - - with car weighs about 5500 lbs.

I tow with an 89 3/4 ton Dodge van. It has the 318 with the 999 trans with the low gear set and lock up convertor. Rear gear is a 2.76. I tow an open trailer and the Dart. About the same weight as you.
It tows fine. I towed to Gainesville Fla a few years ago for the division 2 finals with no problems.
I've had the van for 12 years. We used it for a carpet cleaning truck with about 1000 lbs. of equipment in it for 10 years.
The only trouble I've had is a leaky front seal, and the convertor quit locking up. I had the trans rebuilt while it was out to fix the leaky seal and replaced the convertor.
It's a good van. I used it today to tow to Bristol Dragway and I won the King of the Strip 12.00 index class.
Edit: Don't know about fuel usage now. I haven't done the math since the rebuild and new convertor. On the Gainsville trip with the convertor not locking up it got about 13 mpg. It should be better now with the lock up.
Edit again. It does have load helper springs on the rear shocks.

I have never towed with a van but considered it years ago. I think it would be safe to say that it would be way better than the 1500 truck, what motor? Like others have said, I think it would a good upgrade from your truck depending on the drivetrain.

I have a 97 E350 with a 7.3 TD, extended WB.
Its great. I actually like it more that the truck jsut because the cargo capacity is more useful.

We towed for many years with a 91 E150 conversion, 351w, 4.10's, and basically a 3/4 ton spring pack, class IV with bars. Pulled a 70 mustang in a 20' enclosed. It was enough, but never impressive. Got about 8-10mpg. A club wagon with a 460 back then would have been a much better choice. When we traded for a 26' enclosed and started towing a charger or coronet, the van was outmatched. Switched to crew cab duallies, then to cummins trucks. Will never switch back to gas for towing.

Well I hope I didn't make a mistake.
I bought a 2004 Ford E250 with a 5.4L engine. 95,000 miles. Power windows, power door locks and more importantly cruise control. Its officially a cargo van, but has a lot of passenger van features including cloth seats and full headliner.

i towed with a Ford E350 diesel extended van. i pulled a 24 foot haulmark enclosed trailer, and all i can say is what a mistake. i blew the high pressure oil lines off on the GW bridge, ruined a tranny, the crank trigger broke, front end needed to be rebuilt 3 times, rear springs were shot fast. the pickup is the only way to go imo. ill never tow with a van again.
