The factory knurling can cause a neoprene seal to have a short life. I have a rope seal for a SB from car quest that I am going to use in this 451 build & see how it does.

can it be done without pulling the motor?
I am wondering if it can be done also. I have a Lakewood Bellhousing and block plate on mine.
My crank is aftermarket and does not have the knurling on it like the factory ones do.

I'd use a neoprene seal on a smooth crank, rope on a knurled crank.

yes, i installed a rope rear main seal without pulling the motor, however i think i did have to take out the motor mount bolts and jack up the motor to get my oil pan off, i have 68'coronet with 440 and you do have to take out the center link, once this was done it was not that bad, you have to make sure you get all the old seal out and cleaned up before installing the new seal, they make a kit to install they rope seal, a piece of wire with t-handle, and you just pull the new seal in trim off the excess and use some black rv and you are good to go.

Are you sure it's the rear main seal? The seal can be changed in the car , it's not fun if doing it on your back. Putting a rope seal in in the car , that would be an interesting job .
what else would it be?? leaking oil out the bottom of inspection cover....4 speed
