I was told to use the neoprene seal from Napa.

The factory knurling can cause a neoprene seal to have a short life. I have a rope seal for a SB from car quest that I am going to use in this 451 build & see how it does.

I am wondering if it can be done also. I have a Lakewood Bellhousing and block plate on mine.

My crank is aftermarket and does not have the knurling on it like the factory ones do.

I'd use a neoprene seal on a smooth crank, rope on a knurled crank.

You can change the seal with the trans in and with the engine in, provided you can use profanity effectively.

Are you sure it's the rear main seal? The seal can be changed in the car , it's not fun if doing it on your back. Putting a rope seal in in the car , that would be an interesting job .

they do sell those tools to pull a rope seal thru. Looks like a wire chinese finger cuff on the end of a cable. I bought a couple because I was going to tackle the job once but didn't so I can't comment on the job.

yes, i installed a rope rear main seal without pulling the motor, however i think i did have to take out the motor mount bolts and jack up the motor to get my oil pan off, i have 68'coronet with 440 and you do have to take out the center link, once this was done it was not that bad, you have to make sure you get all the old seal out and cleaned up before installing the new seal,
they make a kit to install they rope seal, a piece of wire with t-handle, and you just pull the new seal in trim off the excess and use some black rv and you are good to go.

I guess those are legitimate areas of concern...I also was thinking that as I pulled into My insurance agents office, He thought the car was overheating but temp was nice at 180...I may have a leaky valve cover or two...I can't see a rear main or others causing smoke....while the oil from the covers could be hitting the exhaust manifolds or exhaust itself....haven't had time to look as My other car is acting up
