what all in timing are you guys with 440's(making more then 775HP) set at? also,If you drive it on the streets also do you have your timing Locked in at full or weight kits ?

Really depends on many things--chamber shape, piston top ( dome, flat, etc ) and fuel used but most Indy head type units will do great around 34-35 degrees Total --thats a good place to start. stock type heads may go as much as 38. Too many things unknown here but if I just bought a racer that I knew nothing about I would start at 34 and go from there--

I would, and do, start with 33 or 34 BTDC and test it at the track, go up to 35 or 36 and test again, keep going up in one or two degree increments until the car starts to slow down ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Twocents.gif) As already said there is no one size fits all due to all the variables in the parts, gasoline, weather, altitude and so on

Thats were i'll start ,34*, I have a track rental Tues.. I always had it set at 12 ,36 full in at 2800 but my Engine guy came and locked in the timing and set it at 38* He said it what the same combo likes in another car he did, I felt it was to high and driving the car around it felt sluggish under 3500 and smoked heavy at Idle and while driving in low rpm's.... by the way, it's a 498, Indy 440-1's(flowing 498)1090 BG dominator, 720 solid roller, 13 1/2-1 and I run c14 3331lbs. 69 Dart ....close to sea level

Locked in is fine on a racer if you can start it Most folks will get the engine turning with the starter THEN hit the ignition "on" and away you go easier on the starter and everything else--most racers are wired that way anyway ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Twocents.gif) The last unit I dynoed very similar to yours only gained about 5 HP by going up from 33 to 36 or so....no biggie to be on the lower end Big blocks aren't that picky but small blocks seem to be more sensitive in my experience especially with stock type heads and usually more IS better Good Luck--have fun!
