Friend needs a bit of hood clearance on his 340 Demon (Holley 950 on a single plane intake, W2 heads) and is hunting for a drop base A/C unit, can anyone reccomend a source?

Your local autoparts store may hook him up. I got a drop base Edelbrock filter at Autozone; about $20. If that doesn't work Summit has about a 1000 different types with various drops.

In my application, the Edelbrock gave about as much drop as I could use without significant changes to the throttle and return spring linkage.

Moroso has a decent air cleaner selection.

I use a Moroso but be sure to check that the carb/throttle pressure linkage doesn't hit the base and get stuck with some of the really low drop bases.

There are plenty of drop bases available, most are based on a 14" air filter... I wanted to keep the stock Mopar 13" unsilenced air cleaner top so I used the bottom half of one of these Ford Air cleaners...Only a 5/8" drop but it does what I needed...

I have found a KILLER drop base air cleaner setup at the local circle track shop - all spun aluminum with a great curve to both the top and bottom pieces which look like it would really improve air flow. And the BEST part - very inexpensive! like $35. I have one sitting over at the ProMax shop for this weekends open house. If it goes over well I may try and talk them into stocking them. I will try a get a couple of pics to upload in a day or too (too busy enjoying the US Nationals to do it asap)

Or better yet - call ProMax and ask them to send a pic!

tell'em Scotty told you to call!

Like mentioned above - I used a circle track air cleaner base. IIRC, about a 2" drop, 16" diameter, a little tweeking on my stock linkage.

I have one. 14" 2 1/4" drop base. Base only. $20 Never used, just mocked up. I thought I would need it for hood clearance, but did not.

Well, problem has been temporarily solved. His Chevy buddy produced a rare and original chromed COPO Camero air cleaner unit that fit perfectly. The deal with the devil? He told him he has to leave the Chevy sticker on top of it!
I'll post a pic later. After I get a look at it for some measurements I'll be fabbing up a replacement ASAP! Apparently with the W2 intake, 2.00" spacer, and the Holley 950 he needed around 4.00" of drop which none of the aftermarket drop bases he could find locally had (Kelowna BC). Final outcome using the COPO unit leaves 1/4" hood clearance, good thing he has a good torque strap!

A 4" drop is probaly gonna make for a major air flow restriction.. How much distance between the base & the lid at the pinch point?? Not much I'll bet...

Exactly. After 2 or so inches of drop, it really does not matter. It really becomes a question of carb to hood clearance and the narrowest restriction between the carb and A/C lid. Increasing the drop will just allows a taller element.

I haven't seen it so I don't know what the top of carb to lid spacing is, but I agree, thin it too much and it's going to be a dam in the river for sure.

Alot of guys running the extreme drop bases will use the flow through lids with filter built in, the the Summit and K&N ones.
