I have tried tried two different pulleys for racing. One spit off the end of the shaft and went down the track, and the other won't keep the belt on. I gave up on the last one because I could not line it up to keep the belt on no matter what I tried. Do they really give you any performance gain?

Performance gain? Slight. Sounds like you have some alignment issues.

Rather than just slow it down (reduced charging at all speeds), the usual method is to keep the same ratio so it charges at idle, and kill the current to the fields under WOT with a micro-switch and relay so there is no drag during the run except the belt friction.

I make my own pulleys for my stuff and yes I do make
the alt pulley larger but not alot due to the groove
I put into them... its deeper so it has a lesser chance
to throw the belt... I use to have a switch to turn
off the field but found it didnt make any difference
on my car so when I replaced my switch panel I didnt
do that switch

I use that same pulley. I kept frying bearings with the high RPMs. I haven't had anymore problems with the bearings since using it.
