I have to put a 400/727 into a 68 charger and was just wondering what some of you guys like better and ease of install, putting the engine and trans in as one piece? trans in first? or engine in first? Me and a friend tried with the engine in first but were having some major alignment issues with the motor mounts. ANY input is greatly appreciated. Also is anyone have any tips on getting the motor mounts to line up correct would be great. Thanks In Advance.

I put them in together and a leveler will make it even easier....very simple that way.

As to your second question, bolt everything to the motor then lower on to the k-member and then put the two bolts in. The motor will easily twist side to side while hanging from the hoist and if you need to go forward or back just push/pull the car.

I raise the engine and trans on the hoist, push the car forward into position and lower. I never move the hoist, only the car, and never jack the car. This way takes about 20 minutes.

eng/trans together. I swear by having the steering box, center link, idler arm all OUT. Use the tilter & replace the crank handle w a welded on nut to use your air ratchet. Level smooth concrete floor, a helper, blankets, several hundred lbs of cement blocks/weights on the cherry picker, make sure the chain/bolts/large washers are CORRECT for what you need.

Thanks alot for the responses, when you said you dont jack up the car you mean you just leave the car completely flat on the ground the whole time? or just until the engine is in? This is the only difference in the way i have done other engines and am thinking if this is why i run into these engine mount problems every time.

Completely flat the whole time, two things though.

First air the tires up and second, I am thin.

man,I do it the hard way or not at all

dirt yard and a swing set

engine/tranny combo stabbed in and push car forward, use a floor jack to catch the tail shaft of tranny and help guide it into place with out xmember and set the engine down on the mounts

done it many times

oh! I only jack the car/truck up to get under it..I am fat in the middle

jack goes in long ways under front bumper and on plywood..if I gots it

i put my 440 in my 68'coronet in by myself , i bolted the 727 up to the motor and put both in one unit, i placed a blanket on the top of transmission to keep the trans from rubbing the paint,i hoisted with 1hand and moved the car with my other, i was in my garage on level ground and car rolled easy, i wld not recomend you do this by yourself, but you can do it by yourself, if you have patiences, you may have to jack up and down more than usual, i swear by putting both in as 1 unit and moving the car into the motor.
