I was going to go the Gen 3 6.1 HEMI route but have recently thought there is better bang for the buck with a 408 Magnum stroker (I like the torque numbers better). I have been considering the 430HP - 480TQ crate motor that Indy sells for 6k with the edlebrock heads. The other option that Indy proposed was the same motor with thier new iron head which I was told would make aprox 470HP and 480TQ for the same price. I was really wanting the aluminum heads to knock another 40 lbs off of the front for handling purposes. I have already trimmed weight off of the front with battery relocation and wilwood dynalites ans some suspension upgrades. But the extra 40HP is tempting. BTW this will be going into a 70'cuda street car.

I have thought about building one myself and came up with aprox $5500 for parts alone, then you have the machine shop costs also.

Anyone have any advice or experince with the Indy motor or other builders.

Also is the extra 40 lbs of weight savings on the front going to help the handling enugh to give up the extra HP.

I don't know why the 408 with Eddy heads is so low on hp. Without knowing the combo I would say that with a different cam and possibly intake you should be able to get the 470 hp. This shouldn't cost more money. Look at the Hughes Engines web site (technical data/tests) to see some of their engine builds.

The aluminum heads should make more power if anything and they'll weigh less. I'd highly recommend going with aluminum heads for the weight savings. If you can't afford ported heads to start with then just run OOTB Edelbrock heads for a couple of years and then pull them off for some port work.

Handling always equals less weight:

1. RMS IFS
2. Fiberglass hood/trunk
3. Alum FW
4. Alum Passon 833
5. Alum Driveshaft
6. Alum Carrier yoke
7. Alum 742 Carrier
8. Composite leafs
9. Alum inverted shocks
10. Mini starter
11. Alum MC
12. No desserts

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't have the spec sheet on the build but they offered to send it.

The ad states;
-430HP
-480TQ
-Alum mopar heads. (I want the Edlebrock though)
-CNC porting
-9.5 to 1 CR
-Crane hyd roller cam
-M-1 Intake
-600 cfm Holley

Anyone have them build this or something similar?

Any other builders that you would choose before Indy? Who?

How about suggestions on a proven build combination.

I would like to get closer the the 500Hp 500TQ marks. But this is a driver and I don't want to port the heads to the point of loosing my low end torque.

Any suggestions Please!

Haven't had any experience with Indy motors, but the iron head option is a good one for the money. Minor porting with those heads will get you there along with a good single plane like a Eddy Victor Junior, cam in the 245 to 250 dur. range / 108LSA and a race style 750 carb. IMO, the iron head ( stellite in & ex seats ) is a better choice ( durability wise ) for the street. If you go that route, suggest you have the heads drilled to accept both Magnum and LA intakes, and have the push rod tunnels clearanced for 1.6 rockers / big lift cams for possible future mods.

As far as the 6.1 deal goes, is there some reason why an old small block can be stroked but a 6.1L can not?

How does 4.080 bore and 4.080 stroke grab you?

http://www.arringtonengines.com/p-1170-426-hemi-stroker-61l-short-block.aspx

It can be built for alot less than that too.

Talk to Hughes Engines about their SB stroker options. They might have what you're looking for.

I Talked to David at Hughes. WOW What a super nice guy! Took time with me to figure out my goals and driveline selection, so we could build a motor that worked for me. Was not impatient one bit and was willing to stay on the line until all of my questions were satisfied. After talking to him I am confident that he is who I want to build my motor.

Thanks
