96 Jeep Cherokee 4.0/automatic, 167,000 miles, ran great.....went to crank it this morning. Acted like it didnt' want to fire at all. I didn't notice the pump humming like it noramally does. So, I took off the rubber hose from the sending unit to the filter, turned the switch and got nothing. I am going to go out on a ledge here and say fuel pump.....but it gave NO warning sign what-so-ever......is that normal? Any other ideas?

Hook the hose back up and slap the bottom of the tank with a mallet while somebody cranks it over. If it runs then, the pump is most likely on it's way out.

Tried the beating thing, still wouldn't crank. I did notice that the low fuel light comes on after you try to crank it.....it normally comes on as soon as you turn the switch on. But now it don't come on til you try to crank it, and its not low on fuel, its got about 1/4 tank.

Could be a relay, but more likely the pump. Yes, they can just "go".
