Over 32 years ago I purchased a 1969 Hemi Road Runner from a junk yard in Bryan, Texas. The car had been sold new at Mid-Cities Chrysler Plymouth in Arlington, Texas and spent most of the next ten years in the Dallas area before being sold in a salvage auction. The Road Runner is nicely optioned, and came A4 Platinum Silver with a M6S Pewter interior. It is a 4 Speed car, and still had the original transmission and 3.54 Dana 60 axle. The Hemi was gone, replaced by a rebuilt 383... at the selling price of $150, I did not complain too much! Over the years I can only recall seeing two other A4 1969 Hemi Road Runners, the first owned by a former NHOA board member... the car had a black interior IIRC. The other was the Platinum/Pewter (Automatic?) car proclaimed to be " 1 of 1" in Mopar Collectors Guide in the 1990s... so I started calling mine " 2 of 1". I have always believed that there were probably 6-10 Platinum/Pewter combo 1969 Hemi Road Runners... but I am starting to doubt it now. Any confirmed Platinum/Pewter Hemi RRs known to forum members... Pictures? The attached picture is shortly after purchase in 1977... Allen

Great story and great picture of your cars!! I've seen three A4 69 Hemi Runners that I can vividly recall. One had blue interior the others had black. I'm 90% sure that all three were autos and If I recall correctly all floor shited cars! KID
Thanks, it is interesting that one had a blue interior... I know of a B7 Blue 1969 Hemi Road Runner that has a M6S Pewter interior!
Any pictures of the A4 Hemi RRs?
Maybe in the next few days I will post the crazy story of how I bought the RR... and how it almost got away... Too much typing for my injured shoulder and hand for now.
Here is a picture of the Hemi RR taken 5 minutes after the tow truck dropped it off at the apartment complex that I lived at:

There's one here in Regina!

Thanks... Great pictures! Did it have a Pewter colored interior? Automatic or 4 Speed?
Any other confirmed sightings or known A4 Hemi RRs...? Anyone?
Here is a shot of the 383 that was in my RR when bought:

BTW, notice the Hemi required master cylinder clearance boot in the Air Grabber ductwork.

Well, before someone else says it, I'll give you 200 bucks for it. That's pretty incredible that you bought it that cheap and the combo is very cool too. I bet the B7 with Silver interior was striking.

Thanks Bill, I think Paul (the NHOA board member) was from Wisconsin... might have been his old car. IIRC, it was a 4 Speed non-console car with a black interior.

A friend of mine used to run the registry for 1969 GTX's and there are several 69 GTX's known platinum with pewter int.
a local friend of mine has a 1969 GTX hdtp with pewter interior ( buckets with console ) and factory air. The only known 69 X known in these colors and A/C
I think there is a black A12 roadrunner in florida with pewter interior

A4 is a great color for the Plymouth B bodies. Pewter interior is nice , but Red is where it's at ! I owned a 69 GTX that was A4 , with Red interior, auto, 4.10 Dana . Should have never sold it . I've owned over 150 Mopars, but truth be told, If I could have just one of them back, that particular car would probably be at the very top of my list (even above my 5 six pack Challengers). Any other known A4 Platinum / M6S Pewter Hemi Road Runners (or GTXs)? Or other A4 Hemi RRs/GTXs with other color interiors?...
I know of four Hemi RR's in A4. All are automatics and only one has the M6S interior.
Here's an A4 Hemi RR that was in Omaha for awhile. I think it wound up in AZ after that.

Putting up another steel building - didn't you just finish the other one? Hope this build goes smoother than the other one - I remember you telling me about your electrician problems.
BTW - did you go to the meeting yesterday? I was unable to make it, I was working on a '66 Belvedere for a guy...
The Electrician that I am using is great! He is a fellow CMPT member and good friend who does top notch work... You might be remembering me talk about how difficult it is to wire a building full of cars and parts. My friend has worked under access conditions most electricians would not accept...
In fact, he has helped me enormously in setting up shelving to start organizing the shop. He is about 2/3 done with wiring the new building...
I missed the club meeting too.

Maybe in the next few days I will post the crazy story of how I bought the RR... and how it almost got away...
Thanks to everyone who posted… looks like my A4 Hemi RR is one of my rarer cars
For those that might like to hear the story of how I acquired the Hemi RR, here is a short(er) version:
It all started when some jerk smashed the rear bumper on my college car, a 1968 440 Magnum powered Polara. They took off without leaving a note offering to fix the damage. With money to fix the damage being in short supply, I decided to replace the rear bumper with a junk yard part, leaving the quarter panel damage for a later fix. After calling about a dozen junk yards, a small one in Bryan said they had nice bumper for my Polara.
When I arrived at the junk yard, I could see the Road Runner sitting forlorn in the distance. I checked in at the office and we went to look at the bumper they had. It was a nice bumper, in fact it looked real nice… on the 1967 Chrysler it was part of. The manager of the yard said he thought they were interchangeable… NOT!
As we walked back towards the office, I started to check out the Road Runner in the distance… trying to make out if the hood callouts were 383 or 440. Being new to the hobby at the time, I did not know that 440 4BBLs were not available in '69 RRs… and the possibility of it being a Hemi car had not even crossed my mind. I then noticed the trunk badge, but thought it was a dealer nameplate… as I mentioned before, I was a Mopar newbie. As we walked, I started to "side-step" to get nearer to the RR (we were still talking about getting a rear bumper for the Polara). About every ten feet, I would walk about 5 feet to the left… the manager would then notice and close back up with me.
Finally, I looked back at the hood callouts and for the first time I clearly saw they were Hemi badges. After regaining my composure, I "casually" asked about "that old Plymouth". The manager said that they had just acquired the car in a lot purchase at a salvage auction in Dallas. We now walked toward the Road Runner, and I asked if the car was for sale. He replied that they had planned to part it out, but he would sell it "as is" at a price of $350… explaining that it had a freshly rebuilt engine. Wiping away the startled look on my face, I asked to see the engine. Sparing me a heart attack, it turned out to be a rebuilt 383.
Making up a BS story about maybe putting the 440 from my "wrecked" Polara in another car, I asked if they would sell the RR minus the rebuilt 383 engine. He said they would sell the car minus engine for $150… a more affordable price for a college kid! I was hoping to do the deal that day, but the manager said it would take a few days to remove the engine AND to obtain the title which was enroute from the auction site. Then the wait began, with me calling every 2-3 days… only to be told the engine was still in the RR, and the title had not yet arrived. This went on for about a month, with me driving by the yard about once a week to make sure the car was still there… it was.
Then one day I called and their phone was disconnected… OMG… PANIC! I made the trip to the yard in record time, and found the gate locked and a sign saying the yard had been purchased by the largest yard in Bryan… Doggett Auto Parts. The yard was almost empty, with maybe a dozen cars scattered about in it… including the Hemi Road Runner! I took off to Doggett, a large dismantler that did not allow access to their yard, but instead had LARGE shelving units with well organized parts.
After arriving at Doggett, I rambled on to a counter guy about the closed yard and the car I wanted to buy. He said that he did not know anything about it, and asked if I would like to talk to Mr Doggett… I said YES! A few minutes later Mr Doggett came to the counter… in a crisp suit, looking like the Chairman of the Board. About halfway through my story, Mr Doggett stopped me and said: "I have spent most of my life trying to live up to the promises made by others, and don't try to anymore. If you want the car I will sell it to you for $150… with the engine… DO YOU WANT IT?".
I stammered out a "Yes!", and he went to check if he had the title. A minute later he was back with the title in hand!!! I wrote a check, got a receipt and the title, and was told the car would be delivered the next day (at 11:00 AM IIRC). At precisely the promised time the next day, a shiny new Ford wrecker pulled into the apartment parking lot with the Hemi Road Runner in tow. The driver expertly backed the car in the spot that I wanted in the first try. The driver was Mr Doggett himself… I SWEAR… in a crisp pair of overalls! As he lowered the car, he told me a story of being forced to a stop on the way over by two guys who wanted to buy the RR. He said that he gave them my name and phone number… PANIC AGAIN!
After he left, I called a hometown friend with a pick-up to flat tow the car to my parent's home with a rented tow bar. After a sleep-less night, we towed the RR the next morning. True story…
Aren't y'all glad that I didn't give the long version of the story?...

Hi, Can I ask if the car has been restored, now? Does it have a Hemi in it? I think that car would be georgeous when done. Thanks for sharing it's story and pictures with us. Most of us can only dream about finding such a car. Ron.
I am sorry to say the RR is still awaiting restoration, although it did get repainted in the very early 1980s. I bought a Hemi engine for the car also in the early 1980s, and have accumulated a lot of NOS parts for it over the years... I hope to have it restored in the next 5-6 years...
Here is a picture taken after the repaint:

I am not sure Robin... possibly because the Silver paint was toast. Also, there was a series of rapid title transfers, and possibly some litigation... The four title assignments were filled out on the back of the title... never saw that before or since. I will try to post some of the documents that I got from the Texas DMV in the next few days.
I had the RR driveable after a day's work... new battery, clean the fuel tank & lines, and kit the carb and it was road ready... the tires were a bit sporty tho!
A few months later I dropped the 440 in... and promptly blew all the facing off of the clutch disc. Then a new clutch disc and off I went...

In the early 80s I found out that the Texas DMV would provide an "Ownership History" of a registered car for a $5 fee. In the Hemi RR's case, I defintely got my money's worth... copies of a couple dozen documents.
The oldest document was a title showing a lien date of 5/1/69, only about 6 1/2 months after the scheduled build date of 10/15/68. I assume "Dan" was the orignal owner who purchased the RR when new from Mid-Cities C-P, but I am not certain.
Here is the title "Leland" had showing the former owner "Dan":

Glad you liked it Gary!
"Leland" only kept the RR for about two years, selling it on 4/19/71. Here is a Power of Attorney form giving POA to someone named "Joe" with the same last name, probably a relative.

Excellent. Do any of them have an amount? Anything to indicate when the motor went missing? That's a great story.
I can't afford this.

No Danny, I received the documents from the DMV in the early 80s for a $5 fee. The Texas DMV still offers an "Ownership History", but most of the early records were destroyed in a fire in the mid 1980s...

Thanks... glad you liked the story! None of the documents showed a sales price, so the only amount that I know is what I paid... $150
Over the years I have heard stories from different sources about cars that MAY be my Hemi RR. The first was about someone that bought a Hemi Road Runner to pull the motor for racing and then resold the car. The other story was about a silver Hemi RR that sat in the back lot of a dealer (car lot) or dealership (new car) for several years while a court fight dragged on.
I need to do some serious research using the Internet...

With the info you have, you may be able to track down the original motor. It does not sound like it was in it by the time it got to the salvage yard so one of the previous owner's knows. Of course, many 4 speed Hemi car's did not have motors that survived but you hear about them being found every once in a while. Good luck.

Thanks... I started my Internet investigation yesterday, and ran into my first dead end. Chuck Taylor Motors is no longer around, and the current occupants of their business location said no former employees were retained when they bought the business.
I might have better luck tracking down the original owner "Dan"... after 15 minutes of detective work using property records and phone listings, I believe that I have located his parents. The lady that I spoke with remembers her son having a car like the silver Hemi RR that he purchased new and raced a lot. He sold the car when he joined the US Marines... She said she would pass along my phone number to Dan.
Stay tuned...

What took you so long to get here Lon?
As I mentioned earlier in this thread, most of the early records were destroyed in a fire in the mid 1980s... but it is worth a try! Due to current day privacy & anti-stalking laws, you will have to comply with the "permitted uses" rules as well... see the form.
The current form seems to be VTR-275, look at the "Title Histories" section. Various forms, including VTR-275 are available at this link:
http://www.txdot.gov/txdot_library/drivers_vehicles/forms/vehicles.htm
Good Luck Lon!

The fact that I'm still in WY has kept me away from the internet for the most part. Hope I can come up with something, that'd be cool. My search @ Sam Houston State didn't turn up anything.

Good for you Allen. I love to hear about another good fortune story about a fellow Texan! Especially one that invloves a 69 Hemi Road Runner in A4 silver. Man that has got to be my all time favorite color on a Runner. Here is a pic of my 69 A4 silver 383 4 speed Runner. While it is a lowly 383 car it is still a winner to me. As you can tell she has had a very hard life and after 40 Michigan winters it's still around. I let my kids use it for high school and they had more fun in that old car. Great story there Allen! JC.
Thanks JC... Seeing the thread pop back up reminded me that I need to try to call the original owner again (he never returned the first call, but he may not have gotten the message). Fellow Texan you say... what part of Texas are you from? Post more pics of your A4 RR...

Sometimes it is tough trying to get in touch with previous owners. I managed to find the second owner of my A4 car from an old electric bill I found uner what was left of the carpet. He did tell this crazy story about the car. Apparently the original owner was into illegal type activities and was using the car for transportation of said stuff. He preceded to tell me that the car came with a 440 six barrel engine from the factory with a lift off hood. After the car was wrecked this cat started to sell off all the high buck stuff from the car to pay legal expenses and that is when second owner bought what was left. It is a Lynch Rd. car and the build date is right in line with when the order came down for the construction of the first six pack cars. The car is an "H" code vin and the tag reads almost identical to what the A12 cars do except the A12 on the fender tag. After reading the story about the red 4 speed "H" code car from Canada, who is a member here, I always wondered if my car could have been a pre-production unit given the second owners story. My car does have the original small font 054 rad in it. Also has the correct leaf springs, torsion bars. I am going to restore the car back to six barrel status and will always have to wonder if the stories were true or not. Either way these cars lived it up when the were new and I am sure each one has a story to tell. Sorry for the long winded post. I hope you find your guy. By the way I am from Ft. Worth, Tx. JC.
You could buy a 383 with the hemi suspension. Can you post a pic of the fender tag?

I just finished this car for a local collector. It is a real Hemi Rag done to OE standards. Every part on the out side of this car in NOS. I would have love to have this car painted in acrylic enamal, but the customer likes the shine. I will post some more pictures later.

In my opinion, a 1969 GTX looks it's best in A4 silver, with red interior.
I have a customer out east with a hemi car in this color and black vinyl top. It's looks absolutely amazing. Looks just like the sales brochure photo
I know the former owner of the shown A4 Hemi vert. Every time I talked to him i'd ask if it was done yet. But I knew he sold the car a couple years ago and glad to see it's finally finished.
sorry for the hijack, carry on

When I had my B7 Hemi GTX I met a fellow in Alberta that had an original paint silver 69 GTX. I haven't heard about that car for years though. If I was ordering a new 69 GTX it would also be silver, black vinyl roof and red interior.
Sheldon
Someone sent me a photo of a 1969 A4 Hemi GTX from Alberta but it had a blue interior like my platinum metallic A12 Runner. (This is a photo of mine.) The A4 GTX was being displayed at shows. Maybe there are two A4 Hemi 69 GTX's in Alberta, one with red and one with a blue interior? That would be nice to know? I would say that an A4 Hemi GTX with platinum interior is pretty rare...but then all 69 Hemi GTX cars are probably relatively just as rare. I guess the value will be in the eyes of the beholder?

I have seen the wedge type fender mount signals on a few GTXs. There was a 69 GTX in a collection out west that was in a few of the magazines some time ago. It was supposed to be an original car and had the wedge type. I know the Sport Sats had them in 69. I am using fenders off a sport sat and my body guy forgot to weld up the holes. I didn't catch it until the car was painted so I am installed the wedge type. But I have never seen them on a Road Runner in 69 (original anyways). But have seen them on some original GTXs.

This '69 Hemi RR was originally A4 with Black bucket seats, auto on the column. I bought it from the second owner who painted it Red because the Silver just fell off the car. It was a Las Vegas car...

Was a red interior available on the Plymouth's? I have a copy of the interior codes and could not find red as an option. I know it was available on the dodge line. If it was available was it only on bucket seat interiors and was it bright red or a dark red?

I'm going off of memory so don't shoot me.
1969 Plymouth were avail in either all red inteior or a combination of red and white. These combinations WERE NOT avail on convertibles. at least I know they weren't on a 69 GTX, but I'm not 100% certain on availability of the roadruuner vert On a 1969 gtx the only avail interiors on a 'vert were. Black Black and white Blue Blue and white Tan Tan and white
not sure but maybe Green Green and white

I felt pretty dumb a few years ago when I had mentioned on here how much I wanted a white RR with red interior. A member pointed out that red wasn't on the chart for the RR. Could get it in a GTX. I settled for a white on tan car. A silver interior car would be pretty cool with A4 outside or R4. Maybe even X9
I want my fair share

Awesome story and pics.A4 is my favorite color.JD my friend has an A12 Roadrunner, its color is also A4 with red interior, automatic, bench seats,no power of anything or anykind not even a radio. He has not registered the car yet and plans on restoring it pretty soon.He also has a 69 A4 GTX.I think platinum silver looks good on chargers too.

I have a 69 GTX that is A4. It has a black interior but supposedly it came with a silver interior. I have read others talk about M6S as the code. Mine says P6S. Would you happen to know what that would be?
Awesome car you have there... Put it back to a Pewter (Silver) interior... then sell it to me!
Is this your GTX by chance?...

Yes... A second broadcast sheet found in my Road Runner was for a GTX with the same A4/P6S combo with a VIN ending in ...234. I thought it might be from your car...

Why was it considered junk in the first place?
I am not sure Robin... possibly because the Silver paint was toast. Also, there was a series of rapid title transfers, and possibly some litigation... The four title assignments were filled out on the back of the title... never saw that before or since. I will try to post some of the documents that I got from the Texas DMV in the next few days.
Update! After MANY years of trying to locate the original owner of the A4 Hemi RR, I just talked to him on the phone!
Dan (original owner) was quite animated in relating his recollections and street "war" stories. I will try to document them in the next few months, but here are a few items that I was told:
> Dan was only 17 years old when he bought the Hemi RR new, literally "off of the showroom floor".
> The original Hemi was blown up with only 26 miles remaining on the warranty coverage. The dealer installed a replacement Hemi engine under warranty.
> The Hemi RR was extensively street raced against all comers... beating them all, except a 1966 Hemi Satellite that tied him. While attempting a rematch, the two Hemis were pursued by four Denton Co. squad cars... the Hemi Satellite was caught, but not the Hemi RR. With the A4 Hemi RR safely tucked away in his father's garage, Dan and his buddies used his dad's (Southlake Fire Chief) scanner to listen to them hunt for a "gray Hemi Beep-Beep".
> Audio recordings were made during many of the races, and sent to a fiend in Vietnam.
> Dan believes that he still has some pictures of the Hemi RR... will send scans when found!
> His payments were about $170 per month on the Hemi RR...
More updates as information is received...

Good job Allen finding out the histories of your cars after so many years. That is an accomplishment to say the least after all these years. If you get bored I got a Hemi Charger from a "raid" to Texas so many years ago that you could check its history out if you want. Maybe you could turn this into a part time job or new reality TV show. Oh ya I'm on over here also now. 1st post.

Very nice GTX you have! I also own a 69 GTX in A4. It has a black interior now but originally it had an A4 interior. I'm thinking of restoring it back to original, does anyone have any idea how many GTX's came with this color combo? Or does anyone know who I could ask for this info?
I got a twin to that car in my shop now, didn't get started on it yet, but its an auto with under 15k original miles, silver on silver with I believe a black top.

Thank Dave!... Welcome to Moparts! I have been developing new techniques to track down previous owners, but all my successes were on cars that I had obtained ownership histories from the Texas DMV in the early/mid 1980s. Such information is much more difficult to obtain now.

I think it'd be cool to find the Hemi RR and get the 2 back together like they were on the showroom floor when Stan saw them.

Hi Allen. I was just at the Atlantic City Auto Auction on Sat, 2/28/15. A 69 A4 HEMI road runner, legit car, was a NO SALE at $80,000. The blue bench 4 speed car now has a black bucket interior. What a CRIME. Silver and blue is fantastic and should have remained that way. So anyway, there is another one for you to ponder.

Well, its been about 9 years since I started this thread, and a lot has changed in my life... increased health problems, marriage, retirement, etc.
I will bump this thread any post some recent photos, and maybe some B-I-T-D Pictures. Over the next few days I will add some text to the photos...

Your car looks great and I congratulate you on keeping it for so many years. I drove a ‘69 Road Runner back in high school in 1975 and that hooked me for life on those cars. Although I haven’t had the same car forever I’ve almost always had a ‘69 Road Runner in my garage. I’ve had Hemi’s, 440-6bbls and 383’s. Today I have an A12 RM21M9A ‘69 Road Runner that’s T5 Bronzefire metallic that was raced back in the day. It’s was a one owner, low mileage and rust free when I got it. I’ve been tinkering with it for the last year and a half getting it more streetable. With good luck I’ll have it ready this winter and be out on the road next summer. Here are before and after pics.

Allen do you remember the particulars on Grady Gunns silver hemi rr? I remember it was loaded up gtx like but was a rr. I remember it had the rocker moldings. Is Grady Gunns A4 Hemi RR known to still be around? Known if it came from Houston?

Good grief, this post is 11 years old! Talk about time capsule. Super cool! So, what is up with the engine and does it have a story too?

I do not know very much about about the history of the Hemi Engine which purchased from a Moparts Forum member, other than it came originally in a 1969 Hemi Charger R/T... Maybe the seller will post in this thread..... As for build, it is basically stock, but I went with the 1970 Hydraulic style (the MP Repro version), and used my NOS426 Hemi P/N 2463549 Crankshaft in place of the crankshaft that came with the engine. For Rods & Pistons I used the combination recommended by the Engine Builder recommended from Eagle Performance....

Lon, I'd be interested to know what all was on the RR regarding the statement "I remember it was loaded up gtx like but was a rr." As you know my Y4 A12 has GTX trim on in with factory trim clips and documented photos back to March '71 with it on there. Thanks. Mike
