Ring & Pinion appear to be going in my 2004 Dodge Ram Club Cab 2wd. Dealer quoted me $1000 for a replacement set of gears alone. Called Carquest etc. and they don't list gears.....Do I have any other options?

thanks

I have the same truck. How many miles yours got and is 2 wheel or 4 wheel. If you ordered the gears from an aftermarket source like Richmond or someone and either knew how to install them or new someone who could you might come out cheaper. Another option is to go find one in the junkyard and just do a rearend swap.

I have a 2004 also and mine was in for warranty about 25k miles
for the rearend and now at 65k miles it making noise again,
but since it under 70k I think it might be under warranty.
mine is a hemi quadcab.

Its a 2wd Hemi with 130,000 miles. Truck works good but has hauled a lot of weight over the years and its starting to take its toll.

I looked on Richmond's site and it says that the 9.25 only goes to 2003....I thought that is what was in mine. I know it has a 3.92 ratio

I would look into a junkyard doner where the truck was totaled out with less miles. Any truck rearend out of a 2002-06 should work and it being a truck it won't be a hard swap. The only thing you need to be careful with is the trucks that had factory 20" wheels had the the 3.90 in them and the ones like I have with 17" wheels have a 3.55 in them.

Thanks for the tip. I have a rare truck that has 17" Chrome wheels but 3.91s. This truck also had a taller goodyear tire on it.

Why do you think the gear set is bad.

Diff Doc is a regular poster on the board. He should be able to help.
Also,
I highly recommend this place, I just did the 9.25 in my 01 Ram and they supplied the parts.
Great to deal with and super good prices with free shipping..

Seems to bee more of a common problem then you think , that has nothing to due with changing the gear oil

My 04 Hemi Sport Quad 4X4 that i bought brand new
and just turned 29,000 miles , hasnt started making any noises yet - I have not serviced the rearend yet , but maybe i should , to at least take a peak inside

I have the extended bumper to bumper 7/70,000 mile warranty that i paid for when i bought the truck brand new , so with that said

I can tell you most of the problems I see with them is the pinion bearings go bad from running low on fluid or vendor problems. Has anyone actually pulled the cover and inspected the ring & pinion ?? Ron

Hi Guys, Thanks for all the responses and ideas

Had the rear apart a few weeks ago because the truck was making an awful howling from 10mph to 70mph which gets progressively worse with speed. Thought it was the pinion bearing. Took everything apart and put new bearing in....same sound and getting worse. Didn't pay that much attention to the R & P because I was sure it was the bearing.....not sure what else it could be.

Also put all new pads and e brake parts on at the same time

Since about 1995
the 9.25 has had manufacturing defects
that it did not have in the 1980s
and I bet that
deep in the records of the
Chrysler Technology Center where they do teardowns
the answer for why
is already written down
