I've got a 1970 breather - one of those black ones - and the inside has oil/gunk build up in it. Would I be able to restore this by soaking/flushing out the inside?

I've soaked them in gasoline for a couple days that seems to help (or in the solvent tank)

Then just rinse them out afterwards..

I have had good results with soaking the breather in wax and grease remover. It will clean the breather without removing the black paint.

I will be removing the old paint and giving it a fresh coat of new. Should the black be a gloss or semi-gloss?

Semi gloss will sulfice,....usually I tape of the the openings, and glassbead the surface, then soak them in a container of laquer thinner, breaks up the oil and gunk pretty good, then blow them out with compressed air, prep with etch primer paint with semi gloss black, or 30% flattened black acrlic enamel Centari (Dupont)
