First off I want to say that after 10 years of pulling with a total loss system I finally put an alternator on my tractor and within the first event knew why did I wait so long to do this. I put a denso mini one wire on and everything thing went great for 2 events and now the regulator I think has screwed up. It is only putting out 5 volts. Because it is a long weekend here in Canada everything is shut down until Tuesday to find out for sure what happened but could this be due to turning it to fast. My crank pulley is at least twice the size of the alternator pulley.

Mark how many revs do you turn the engine? I really
doubt its turning to fast... I think the regulator
took a dump

6500 - 7000 But with the crank pulley being bigger would that not be at least double that Mike?

shure would be, if you have a (as an example)4" pulley on the crank and a 2" on the alt then the alt would be running twice the crank rpm, measure your pulley's and you will find out the amount of overspeed you are compared to your crank.

Light travels faster than the speed of sound,,,this is why some people seem bright untill you hear them speak.

All crank pulleys are larger than the alt pulley

How are you getting such low voltage? unless there is a diode on the out put wire you should get at least batt voltage , 5 vdc is real low, check your meter ground and your alt ground, I don't think its a rpm problem you can turn them up pretty high, is it possible you ran dirt thru it, we trashed quite a few alts mud racing till we went 16vdc with no charging system

You guys are correct in the fact that its spinning the
alt faster than the crank but they all do so I really
dont think that the issue

Does anybody publish max RPMs for their alts?

I don't know why more people don't run them. I used to crew on a car that the sheep that owned it couldn't wait to rip the alt off.

I can recall people saying how much better the car was doing w/o it- until I pointed out that the car was half a tenth slower w/o it. I didn't last much longer dealing with that kind of logic all the time.

I want my fair share

Dirt through it? That's funny.Yes it has probably had some dirt through it being a tractor puller I don't get in the mud like you but all I see is dirt (not making fun of your help). The voltage I mentioned was with the alternator off and being checked on a local parts store machine.
I thought like MR P Body said all crank pulleys were bigger but I wasn't sure if you guys were buying some aftermarket small crank pulleys.

Have you checked the voltage on the wire(that hooks
up to the alt, battery line) to see the voltage there
and check the voltage at the battery. I think you
just have a bad alt/reg

I think so also Mike. I have a voltage gauge on the tractor and it is where it always is static just doesn't go up when I start up which led me to taking the alternator off to check. On my way to a pull now so it will be back to the old way of doing things.

I took my denso mini in and they said the rotor was bad. They replaced it under warranty but is this something that I done to cause this failure? I didn't want to ask this question at supplier in case it happens again.

Maybe the mud and dirt you run in... thats about all
that would tear up a rotor.... since you dont run for
a long period of time you might want to make a shield
to protect it from the mud and dirt

I was huntin thru some paper work lookin for max rpm and did not find anything, we turned a hitachi 55 amp to around 15k with no problems, you could try going to a larger alt pulley like 3" to slow it down and see if it helps

I confirmed the rpm wasn't a problem but maybe the dirt and water would affected the rotor?
