For those who don't like Boyd (I don't know him well enough to have an opinion) just remember it could be worse.

They could have called these guys.

I heard they were gonna do a tribute bike for it, and then bury themselves and make the rest of the world happy.

As of MATS, Herb was going to be there to hopefully get the beast running.

After getting many of the correct parts together [i.e. 1957 vintage parts], Herb was told a few weeks ago about Coddington's involvement, and from that point forward wanted nothing to do with the project.

I don't think anybody believes that its pristine anymore. All we're doing now is hoping for the best, that it hasn't been rotted away to nothing.

The thing that scares me the most is the multiple water lines in the vault. I get the feeling that the water has raised and receded in there a BUNCH over the last 50 years.

That does not look good.

and can someone tell that lady that she does not need to announce "There she is" anymore.

Well at least it didn't crack in half and drop back into the hole.
Then the lady would have been yelling "There She is.... Ooops... There She goes"

That close up shot on the Unearthing video at the 5:52min mark looks bbbbbbad at full screen.
Looks like small pieces of the fender near the top and then again about 6" above the bumper are...
well, just gone

Might be molding.... not real familar with the model.... in any event. It ain't happy

Why did they feel they had to bury it?? Didn't they think of a mosaleum type thing, with a huge marble sealed box on the lawn of the courthouse, enscripted with all that historic mumbo jumbo. That would have been a constant reminder over the past 50 years, and the risk of water wouldn't have been there at all...... duh!!!

They're lucky they didn't pop the top on the tomb and find it was completely full of water.

Had to protect it from NUKES! It was safer for it underground.

Barry, the mindste in 1957 was nuclear disaster. We had a "bmb shelter," with canned goods and fresh water and other necessities up until the mid sixties.

The tomb was, in that mindset, the best way to preserve the car.

What sucks is that I'm heading north this weekend and won't have any internet access and only local TV stations. SO unless they put it on the local news I won't get to see how it turned out until Sunday night.

If they filled the tank with water and then sealed it shut, other than the soft parts, the car would be quite solid.

Reminder for next time- fill the tank with bacon grease...

Several people have asked this and the answer is quite simple. This was right in the middle of the Cold War era. Nukes were on everyone's mind and it seems like everyone was building a bomb shelter. They buried the car for that very reason. So it could withstand a nuclear holocaust should it ever happen.

Are there any pictures around of the crypt after she was removed?

I watched the unveiling from the closed circuit feed at the convention center. I'll admit having the car ready to lift at a specific time turned out pretty nice. After it was lifted and loaded onto the trailer I bolted to see her paraded down the street. With helocopters above, horses, etc. it was a total blast walking beside her with the crowd for two blocks north, west about two blocks, back south and then seeing her backed into the convention center. It was so much fun!

Now back to the quote/question... I went back to see the vault and I wish I did not have to report this... The police would not let us get close and even ordered us back. While ordering us back he said the dump trucks are on the way and they need room. He said the liability was to much... That is just one of the things which has changed the past 50 years. I doubt if they are going to put a plaque which says a car was buried at this site in 1957 and removed in 2007... I think it is sad that ordinary people cannot even get a close look at the empty vault. I am sure the hole is filled by this time.
