I have always wondered if you can put in '68-'71 340 pistons (internally balanced) on a '72+ 340 (externally balanced) engine without any mods. I guess i was wondering if it throws off the balance. Just always wondered.

yes you can as long as your using all 8 pistons. Your balancing on "Internal" balancing is done by either adding or removing weight to the crank. 1 Rod and 1 Piston is required. External Balancing the weight is added or removed to the "Balancer" and Flywheel or torque converter......

I was kind of asking the same thing in a round about way. So, does anyone know what we are looking at to basically make an old style 340 out of a lower compression 340?

cast cranks are lighter then forged cranks...that is why they are externally balanced..

if you add heavier pistons 68-71, you will need to add more weight..either by mallory metal in the crank....or exteranlly on the balancer and flexplate
