Broken rod. Looks pretty similar to what I pulled out of the Belvedere oil pan a couple years ago.

I assembled the engine in my garage. Nobody to blame but me I guess. For What? I don't know. Not gonna sweat it.. Probably just start over. I've had some real cool offers to help me out, and some very good people sent PMs with advice. I appreciate it.

I think I'll step away from the racing thing and go back to the street stuff. 540" Pump Gas Engine. I'm not going anywhere yet...

But I am updating my " Lessons Learned " Book. I'm on Chapter 17..

Sorry to hear about this, Bubba. Everyone has made mistakes along the way(I know I have), so no need to beat yourself up about it. You have the right attitude for sure Keep your head up and kick some butt on the streets when you're good and ready.

Look close at the carnage...

Don't think this was a rod failure. This problem started in the wrist pin area of the piston. The pin may have just broke. This happens from weak pin or hydrolocking or severe detonation. The pin boss in the piston may have failed. But, I kinda tend to agree with Mike as I was thinking along the same idea. The pin boss is simply broken out of the piston. Looks like the pin may have dug into the cylinder wall and ripped the piston apart.

Post some pics of the cylinder wall. What kind of damage happened to the cylinder head on that cylinder?

Bubba, maybe keeping things simple would be the smartest and most economical idea! A "540" pump-gas motor sounds like the ticket! If you need any help with anything, and I'm available,I'll be glad to lend a hand! Best of luck on whatever you decide to do! Randy

A friend had similar carnage to his motor, It was determined that the spiro lock came out, [ it was found to be in good condition ] the pin slid out causing the rod to break off the bottom of one side of the piston, then the rod proceeded to poke around for a while with nothing but a rist pin on the ending up with a similar picture like yours. Sorry, i hope mine don't come out.

Always sad to see this kind of damage. Its taken me a year to get parts rounded up after the wifes swallowed a valve. good luck with the next one.

When I asked who built the motor,
I wasn't looking to blame anyone.
These aren't stock parts and stuff happens.
I thought you had Best build a motor for
you before and was just wandering if you
were still using them.
That Mirada is awesome.

Man, tough hop. Only thing worse, is being a Twins fan. At least you are being pretty realistic. Unfortunately, not much a guy can do about it. Good luck on the next one.

I sure hope the block is usable... Looks like the Wrist pin beat the snot out of the cylinder wall. I'm sure it will clean up with 4.50 Bore. Found all the Spiral locks, and the Wrist pin itself looks good. Not really GOOD, but better than the other parts.

No problem David.. I didn't take offense. Stuff Happens to used race parts. I'm done with the Mirada. Time to move on to something else. Soon as I find it.

Counseling would'nt work at this point.. I'm too deep already.
