That really blows, don't even know what to say but I can imagine what you're going through. I hope you get it fixed for Norwalk if the block is ok.

That's ugly, Randy is that Bubba's piston or the guy "Jeff" you mentioned here?
Hope it's not Bubbas..................
I'd still like to see that big ole "Fairmont" run

Re: Guess this Carnage? - 07/22/09 04:48 AM
Dang Bubba.....does that mean I have the faster Mirada again? Hope that's not your stuff! BTW when I read your post on the new engine a friend of mine made three passes on his new World Block engine and it exploded big time (block ruined). Guess that's why I have a hard time steering away from the Moparbilly old way of thinking. Build it cheap, have fun, build another. That's the only way I can afford to play this game.

Wow
That really sucks
Hope it didn't cause too much other damage.

Re: Guess this Carnage? - 07/22/09 11:32 AM
did we figure out if this was bubba or someone else.. i saw that the mirader was on RJ as a roller for sale. i just lost my new 500 incher. a feel your pain. im on my 3rd motor this year. the first looks to have froze or the sleeve moved? the second was a prebuilt shortblock 500 incher, now i put the 1st back together with a new block.. this whole going fast thing really loses its luster when parts break. or catch fire

This is Bubba's... it happened on Saturday morning
when he was doing a TnT pass next to Rick Ross, I
was watching the pass and heard a pop but Bubba said
it was doing alot more than that.... now I see why

I think I see one spirolock in there that might

That's gotta hurt. Noticed the for sale ad for the car and trailer, hope it doesn't come to that. Stick with it Todd, you've come so far it'd be a shame to stop now!

Bubba, that just hurts all over, in so many ways. Now what ? Rebuild or sell as a roller ? Wish I could give you a big hug....... then start drinking heavily and down 3 dozen Atomic wings with ya..

Re: Guess this Carnage? - 07/22/09 06:41 PM
Great, Someone left one side of the spiral locks out of the piston. (I know guy that did this once, it came apart at 7800rpm with a big load of juice).
Posted By: Leon441
Re: Guess this Carnage? - 07/22/09 11:57 PM
You don't have to leave one side out to do this.
If your pistons are setup for double locks all you have to do is leave one out. The pin will beat back and forth until it kicks the other one out.
I sent a piston and rod to the machine shop for bob weight measuring. They left one lock out. If it had not been for the ring rail the pin would have hit the cylinder wall. I had the engine apart for something else and caught the problem before really tearing a lot of parts up.

Dang, I guess "Bubba shot the jukebox last night" sorry I could not resist. This stinks

I assembled the engine in my garage. Nobody to blame but me I guess. For What? I don't know. Not gonna sweat it.. Probably just start over. I've had some real cool offers to help me out, and some very good people sent PMs with advice. I appreciate it.
I think I'll step away from the racing thing and go back to the street stuff. 540" Pump Gas Engine. I'm not going anywhere yet...
But I am updating my " Lessons Learned " Book. I'm on Chapter 17..

Sorry to hear about this, Bubba. Everyone has made mistakes along the way(I know I have), so no need to beat yourself up about it. You have the right attitude for sure
Keep your head up and kick some butt on the streets when you're good and ready.

Re: Guess this Carnage? - 07/24/09 02:18 AM
Look close at the carnage...
Don't think this was a rod failure. This problem started in the wrist pin area of the piston. The pin may have just broke. This happens from weak pin or hydrolocking or severe detonation. The pin boss in the piston may have failed. But, I kinda tend to agree with Mike as I was thinking along the same idea. The pin boss is simply broken out of the piston. Looks like the pin may have dug into the cylinder wall and ripped the piston apart.
Post some pics of the cylinder wall. What kind of damage happened to the cylinder head on that cylinder?

Re: Guess this Carnage? - 07/24/09 02:20 AM
Bubba, maybe keeping things simple would be the smartest and most economical idea! A "540" pump-gas motor sounds like the ticket!
If you need any help with anything, and I'm available,I'll be glad to lend a hand!
Best of luck on whatever you decide to do!

Re: Guess this Carnage? - 07/24/09 02:36 AM
A friend had similar carnage to his motor, It was determined that the spiro lock came out, [ it was found to be in good condition ] the pin slid out causing the rod to break off the bottom of one side of the piston, then the rod proceeded to poke around for a while with nothing but a rist pin on the ending up with a similar picture like yours. Sorry, i hope mine don't come out.

Always sad to see this kind of damage. Its taken me a year to get parts rounded up after the wifes swallowed a valve. good luck with the next one.

Re: Guess this Carnage? - 07/24/09 03:55 AM
When I asked who built the motor,
I wasn't looking to blame anyone.
These aren't stock parts and stuff happens.
I thought you had Best build a motor for
you before and was just wandering if you
were still using them.
That Mirada is awesome.

Re: Guess this Carnage? - 07/24/09 10:04 AM
Man, tough hop. Only thing worse, is being a Twins fan. At least you are being pretty realistic. Unfortunately, not much a guy can do about it. Good luck on the next one.
Posted By: Bubba
Re: Guess this Carnage? - 07/24/09 11:33 AM
I sure hope the block is usable... Looks like the Wrist pin beat the snot out of the cylinder wall. I'm sure it will clean up with 4.50 Bore. Found all the Spiral locks, and the Wrist pin itself looks good. Not really GOOD, but better than the other parts.
No problem David.. I didn't take offense. Stuff Happens to used race parts. I'm done with the Mirada. Time to move on to something else. Soon as I find it.
Counseling would'nt work at this point.. I'm too deep already.
