I'm curious as to whether there is a manual transmission that can be hooked up to the new 5.7l Hemi? If so how much different from the old SB set-ups? 4sp, 5 sp or 6sp? May entertain the possibility of putting one in a 68 Cuda if it won't take a boat load of fabrication.

Any LA transmission will work, I used a 727 on my 67 Bcuda vert swap.

Darn near anything that fits a small block will fit a 5.7 or 6.1, except one bolt hole on the bellhousing (nothing to worry about) and also the flywheel won't interchange.

If you get a chance, check out P5153602. It's a sfi bellhousing set up for 5.7/6.1 with either an A833 or a Tremec TKO. Not only that, but it can be used with either regular Z bar/mechanical clutch linkage, or hydraulic clutch actuation using mostly stock 1995 Dakota parts. It's a very nice, little known part Mopar does not promote very much for some reason.

There are also flywheels for it in steel or aluminum. Steel is P5153592, aluminum is 93. Also note Mopar actually has the parts in stock and none of the parts I've mentioned are on backorder, so no problem getting any of it.

Thanks for the info. My father/son project may take a turn. The hydraulic set-up is good to know about as I would want that regardless of using a 360 or the Hemi. Project looks to keep getting more and more interesting.

Hey Zippy,
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't seem to locate it. I just picked up an 06 5.7 Hemi to put in a 69 Dart. I need to know which trany to use. I'm going manual for sure...I want a 5 or 6 speed...I'm also on a budget...anything I can pickup used from a salvage yard?
Thanks

About the only budget manual trans that will be reasonably easy to install is a A833 4 speed.

There are a few truck 5 speeds that will physically bolt to the engine, but there is no flywheel available for them to fit the 5.7 crank. 5.7 is 8 bolt.

T56 can be made to work as can alot of others, but that approach isn't too budget friendly since the salvage yards aren't really overflowing with them.

Ok. The fabrication part of the swap doesn't concern me, I'm just trying to avoid putting out $3k for a Keisler deal. I thought I had read somewhere about a chevy 6 speed or something like that? Please forgive me, but I've only read enough to be dangerous. I've decided to hold off my research until I actually acquired a 5.7, so here goes. I'm going to buy a QuickTime bh whichever way I go, so I'm open to tranny variations...but as you noted, I'll need a flywheel as well.

Thanks a bunch for your help. I'm prepaired to spend some money as this conversion isn't cheap, but I'm just trying to spend it wisely. If I can save on buying a used tranny, I'd like to try.

Thanks again

I think the 98-02 camaro/firebird t56 6 speed will work. It appears to me that the shifter is closer than the after market t 56 magnum for the E body. It also has a cheap $65.oo slave cly/throw out bearing. The Chevy Pressure plate and clutch disc will fit the T56 and mopar 130 tooth fly wheel. It does require alot of floor and cross member modification. as I understand it the input shaft is just .200 different than the Viper input shaft. It does use a diff pilot shaft. Good luck
