I need to remove the front section of my Caltrac to work on the bushing, etc.

Question:

What is the best way to "jack" the car up,,,or where to place the jack (under the diff ?, under the spring ?,, both ? ),,,so i can remove the front eye bolt? ,,,,and just drop the front portion of the leaf spring down about 3-5"...

Dont need to remove the bushing,,,just add a washer or two and perhaps lub' it up a bit....having some "clearance" issues i need to address

Wasnt sure how much tension that front spring eye is under and what it will do,,,with the bolt out.....

sorry for the dumb question...

Doug

Doug, put your jack stands under the body and use your
floor jack under the diff, take the lower shocks free
the lower the diff to where the front bolts are neutral
and pull them(might have to tap them out

Thanks Mike ,,,,Doing this in my mom's garage up in Paw Paw (while on vacation and visiting,,,plus she is about 30 minutes from US131 ) with limited tool supplies...lol

I'll have to pick up some jack stands at the local Tractor Supply,,,

The spring/frame bracket seems to be binding up on the front eye portion of the spring ....was going to put a washer between the outside of the spring eye,,,and inside of the frame bracket,,maybe a little grease to that area wouldnt hurt as well ?
(right now,,,the front eye/spring portion is "clamped" next to the bracket with NO gap what so ever ...)

The inner bushing on the front eye,,,is aluminum,,,with a inner steel "sleeve" that the bolt runs thru,,,hopefully that isnt binding either,,,

Thanks,

any other input always welcome....

Doug

Doug I'm not all that familiar with the front of the
Caltrac but can you just put a prevailing torque nut
or a nylock nut on just tight enough to allow movement

I was going to do this,,,but,,,the frame/perch/hanger,,,to me,,,,looks too thin....
I think i am going to have some new frame hanger stuff welded in later this year....
The ones on there look to be pretty thin metal,,and actually "deform" a bit when you really tighten things up...

If your at Martin this weekend,,,you'll have to take a look at tell me what you think.....

Was hoping the washers,,would keep the frame box portion from distorting,,,,and "pinching" the front of the leaf's,,,,,not optimal,,,but hoping it will help.

Hi doug thoses are 3 inch inboard mopar spring relocation kit.also there was a post about a year ago that if you used the caltracs with a spring loaction kit. the caltrack kit came with washers to take up the clearance like what you are running into.I told calvert i had the springs moved in when i bought the kit.but it looks like they never sent me the washers etc. so you might call calvert and see what he says about it.because i did not even know there was a diffrence untill i read that post. Best of luck Mopar65

Thanks Bobby,

I measured the frame hanger,,,they are NOT 3",,,actually are 3 1/4"
Based on this,,,,Calvert said i SHOULD have some type of spacer in there.....
The big question is,,,,,whether or not i have the correct size INNER metal sleeve that sits inside the aluminum eye bushing....if that inner sleeve is TOO short,,,,then things will bind,,,
When i get home,,i will pull it all apart,,,measure that inner metal sleeve,,,,then put the correct size spacers in there.....

This is a pic WITHOUT the washer........note the inner sleeve,,,

This is a pic WITH the washer........

thanks for the info on the relocation kit,,,,that would explain some of the "gap" i am seeing,,,,wondering if there is some binding going on ??

I am going to "loosen" things up,,,,and see how it goes.

Doug,

Smother the outer of the steel insert with never-seize. The two dissimilar metals don't play well together.

The inner bushing should be the same width as your boxes inner spread width. Then use those big washers to line the spring/cantilever up.

Rob

Rob,
I just got back from the garage,,figured out the problem,,,,then read your post,,,,

THIS IS THE PROBLEM..........you nailed it....

I am having some major binding issues,,,,,with the way things are setup....

I have discovered,,,like you mention above,,,,the INNER bushing is NOT the same width as my boxes inner spread width,,,,mine are TOO SHORT,,,,,,

As a result, the triangle (cantilever?),,,,is actually riding on the bolt that threads thru,,,as opposed to the inner bushing,,,on one side....therefore,,,,BINDING....

The frame box inner width is about 3 1/4",,,,
The inner bushing/sleeve,,,,looks to be 3"

I am going to have to get some new inner sleeves,,,,

I am now wondering what kind of shape they are in,,,and if i will be able to get them out of the outer aluminum bushing,,etc,,,probably seized up by now...

Might just get new outer alum bushings,,and new inner sleeve bushings,,,,and be done with it,,,

good catch Rob,,,,I just figured it out,,,and you beat me to it,,,lol ( and you were not even under the car looking at it,,,,lol).

Doug

Now i am curious what kind of effect correcting this will have on how the car leaves,,,60',,, glad i found something wrong,,,that i can fix,,,and perhaps get some improvement out of the car......

I am glad you found the problem Doug. I will take the blame for messing that up.
but did calvert say there was a diffrence between a bushing for a stock rearend and one that was moved in to the frame rails. doug please look through all the reciepts i gave you. I think the original one was in the stack i gave you.also rob beat me to the answer also. thanks Bobby

I think their "standard" inner bushing size is 3", but they also have a 3 1/4" used for the frame relocation kits...
