Hopefully, I've remembered how to post pictures. This is the thrust washer that I cannot figure out where it goes. Can someone please help? The tranny is from a 78 Dodge Diplomat police car, and this washer does not show up on the manuals that I have.
thanks everyone.

Hmmm. OK. Let's see - I'm looking at the ATSG service manual, page 46 - at the top is a picture of the rear clutch, and it shows a #2 thrust washer. Don't know if you have this particular manual, but if so, would you mind taking a look and see if I've found it? Or, would you happen to have an exploded view/picture?

the #2 thrust washer looks just like the #1 thrust washer and is usually a fiber washer.

those washers usually dont have a tang on them...but i am no expert.

here is a picture of that washer in place

Thanks very much 'cuda. I think I'm going to end up taking it apart, at least part way, and looking again. I know I have the washers in place for the planetary gears (mine has 4 instead of 3 gears), and past that, I just can't remember now. That's a great picture, though.

Yes the 2 thrust washers are a fiber type material , or plastic , his washer is what you would find in the geartrain attached to the main/outputshaft , he must have one in there or else the geartrain endplay would be in the neighborbood of .100 when max is under .030

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the help. I would think, though, that my washer needs to go where there is a "notch" or "hole" for at least one of the tangs to fit into. The inside tang is just flat, whereas the outside tang is "bent" down (or up depending on your point of view, I guess). I think the cat got up on my work bench and moved the plastic bag I had this washer in. It was with a snap ring that I've put in already, so I'll take it apart and look in that area. I'm such a dufuss sometimes!

74, that goes in the front planetary setup. The 904 uses a smaller one and the wide ratio gear set, like the 999 should have, has a larger diameter one. You take the big snap ring off and then the planet carrier comes out and that thrust washer is between the ring and the outer drum/shell. Most good kits come with both the larger and smaller thrust washer.

Dave, here is one. This is basically the 904 family from 1962 until 1988 or so.

So based on your late part number, and you having the thrust washer they used only from '88 till '90 or so, I am betting you have a 1988 904 LU Heavy Duty from a car application or possibly a truck if you have the HD extension housing.
