What are everyone's thoughts on using this gasket alone as a head gasket. I need to replace a copper head gasket leaking oil so I thought this is dead soft and basically a thin copper gasket so if I painted it real well both sides with that sticky permatex stuff why would it not seal???
Course if it did not I could change it back out and go with 1009. Need more compression

Not afraid to try so thought's??
oh block is o-ringed and I don't intend to put rings back in

It says to use it only as a shim for a conventional gasket??

I've used dead soft copper with block O rings and Coppercoat but never without the rings, don't see any advantage to copper without the rings.

I use the M/P steel shim (.020) gasket on my eddy headed 440. Used lots of Permatex copper spray sealer. 11 to 1 comp. Been two years now with no problems.

Wont work, I would NOT chance it. Ever see a Torched block and piston before? It will make you sick to ruin your motor.

Thanks guys I may try it anyways with sticky paint on Permatex looks like a thin soft copper gasket to me. Just .020 instead of .032 to .062?? I'll order them with extra 1009 gaskets and keep a close eye on it any hint of problems and back off!!
Thanks again
Of course once I get them I can get a good look at them

"Fel Pro - Wedge Headsaver Spacer Shim"

It's not even a gasket, by it's own description.

Some have used the .020 gasket with success. Cometic makes a pretty good MLS gasket that is only .027. Good products with proven results

What are you going to use to fill the O ring grove

We know a guy that used the block saver as a gasket and it flamed apart cutting a line like a torch cut in his head and block. We have used them as a shim before we could get optional thickness (mls) gaskets on low cpmpression street engines. With the great selectionsof gaskets, particulary Cometics why take a chance. We have had success with SS fire ringed FelPro on blocks with a recieving groove and not had to fill them in.If your going to fill them in try Alvins"Hi-temp LabMetal.

I guess I'm with Hemifred here. Why the post?
If you go to the 1009, thats all you need. To use only that dead soft copper...you'll be apparently have"issues". I'd look at the steel shim only. You'll get that .020 thickness to up your compression. Make sure your mating surfaces are totally flat. If your looking for more compression, that, to me is the best answer.

If no reciever groove then to me the gasket is not thick enough to have any place for the o-ring to go....

If a reciever groove, then there is the room for the o-ring so I would think it would be fine....no different than any other copper head gasket....

But I have not stayed in a Holiday Inn recently..so take it as you may.

He said he wasn't going to use o-rings.

I'm going to get a set in and decide when I look at them. Got 1009's coming too. JB weld or other is an interesting idea to fill the grove. If I do it, it will only be on for 4 to 5 races i want to attend then out comes the block for decking to remove groves and then just fel pros. I'll keep it slightly to the rich side if I try it!!
Really appreciate the comments and thoughts I'll let you know what I do and what results are if I dare try it!!!
Not sure I can stop myself!! LOL!!

Reason I ask for advice is just that to get advice, ideas and a sounding board for my ideas. then that gives me pause for thought. Gaskets won't be hear for a week to ten days so I'll be back and forth on this till I decide it's time to put the heads back on. Now had I thought about filling inn the groves last year I probably would have had fel pro 1009's on and no leaks! LOL!!!
course i get an idea in my head

wonder about it
get advice
then more
thanks again all

FWIW, back in the day, before you could purchase such things, I made a pair of head gaskets out of .020" dead soft copper (I'll never do that again) and used them on a 6-71 blown 426 wedge with block O rings, worked just fine. Without O rings I wouldn't even consider it.

What's wrong with Mr. Gasket #1135?

Steel shim, .018 compressed thickness...

CHEAP!

My feeling is they may have their compression dint right were my o ring grove is. and this
quote
"Mr. Gasket head gaskets are ideal for stock rebuilds and mild performance applications"
Now if i try and fix ring groove with labmetal maybe since what ever I do is short term??
more
and

I pull shifts in this thing at 7400 and it kicks the shifts about 7600 but present compression is 10.5 with a bigish roller would like 11.5 to one will mill the heads some more while they are off.
NO power adders so not to much heat!
