Thinking about a nice budget build 440 for my 1970 Challenger. Want some headers that will be easier to work around and cheaper than some of the others out there. The Headmen 'Shorty headers look like it would fit the bill perfectly for my application. combo is a 440 auto, power steering and floor shift. Any one useing them or know if their is a plus/negative to them beside performace level compared to a long-tube type? I'm not making big power, just want some extra ponies and cheap headers sounds like a good way to go.

I've wanted to use them also but from what I gather they'll hit the steering box on anything but a street rod(their intended app).

I've got them on my '60 NewYorker with the 500" stroker topped with Edelbrock heads.
The angled sparkplugs of the Eddy heads gives slight issues at a couple of sparkplugs, but this can be solved with some angled plugboots.

I'm sure the shorties are a restriction on the motor, but I've been thinking of cutting off and enlarging/stretching the collector slightly for better flow and torque.

There was an article about them in Mopar Action a few years back. I think it's still on their web site. Must use mini starter if I remember right.

they used them on "muscle car" on their cuda project - ended up cutting them all up to get them in without clearance issues. i just have the regular hedmans and they fit great and there's plenty of room

Muscle Car TV guys come right out and said no headers are built for that mopar. (E Body) They claim the only bolt in headers would be custom headers.

Keep old mopars alive.

i know it...i about yelled at the tv...sometimes the things the people say on those shows is just stupid. stacey david = best tv auto repair show

when in all reality, they could've just dented a tube or 2 and been done...or, bought regular long tubes and had no install issues

I don't know about E-bodies but I've got them on my C-body and they fit like they were made for it E-heads and all and they aren't even listed for that app. As for performance, they wouldn't be as good as full length but they have to be better than manifolds.

It isn't, if you have the right tools for it. Like making cuts at precise angles for instance.
Making your own headers is just time-consuming.

I once gave it a shot at creating a set of full-length headers for a fullsize Chrysler of mine.
Didn't have the right tools to begin with, but then again I didn't really care much how it ended up looking, I just wanted a pair of headers. This was just some sort of testcase for me.
Started out with cutting up 2 sets of headers; a used set of B-body Hedmans, and a set of motorhome headers which were listed wrong on the Summit-site.

Once I started piecing/cutting/sawing/tacking/mounting all the tubes together I got to me how much time went into this.

Here's what I started out with...

Have you looked into Schumacher creative services headers? Have a couple of friends that have them and they fit great, don't leak, and leave ample room to work in and round everything. Just a thought....

Thanks for the heads up guys, this was really informative. I've seen the m on c-bodies, but knew they had larger engine compartments. I wanted as good header with clerances for the steering box (power), spark plugs, suspension nd engine/starter work. So far I can't see spending $900 tti's and the schumacker is at that slightly costly range. Might have to entr a new post of some ideas.
