I've wanted to use them also but from what I gather they'll hit the steering box on anything but a street rod(their intended app).

I've been following header fitment problems for years & my next one I am going to get a kit & cut/deburr & tack them together then call a welder. It cant be that difficult

It isn't, if you have the right tools for it. Like making cuts at precise angles for instance. Making your own headers is just time-consuming.
I once gave it a shot at creating a set of full-length headers for a fullsize Chrysler of mine. Didn't have the right tools to begin with, but then again I didn't really care much how it ended up looking, I just wanted a pair of headers. This was just some sort of testcase for me. Started out with cutting up 2 sets of headers; a used set of B-body Hedmans, and a set of motorhome headers which were listed wrong on the Summit-site.
Once I started piecing/cutting/sawing/tacking/mounting all the tubes together I got to me how much time went into this.
Here's what I started out with...

Have you looked into Schumacher creative services headers? Have a couple of friends that have them and they fit great, don't leak, and leave ample room to work in and round everything. Just a thought....
