Hello all,

I am hoping that someone here can help me out with some questions that I have concerning 1966, 1967 and 1968 factory low back bucket seats and the differences between them. Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Richard

(1) Were headrests ever an option on the 1966-67 B-Body low back bucket seats? I don't see them listed in my 1966 or 1967 factory parts books, but I wanted to double check to make sure that I didn't miss them.

(2) If not, would it be possible to add them to the 66-67 seats by using parts from 1968 low back buckets?

(3) If that's possible, what additional parts would I need to find that aren't included in the 68-70 bucket seat headrest rebuild kit offered by Mike Ross at B/E&A Restoration Parts shown below?

(4) Are 1966-67 and 1968 low back bucket seats interchangeable as far as seat tracks, seat foams and other related parts other than the seat covers? I have all new 1966 Coronet seat covers and seat foams from Legendary Auto for my 1966 Coronet 500, so that's why I'm asking.

(5) Do the 1968 low back buckets have locking seat backs? 1966 and 1967 buckets do not and that bothers me for safety reasons on a street driven car like mine will be.

(6) Is there a way to add later model year bucket seat hardware to be able to have locking seat backs on the 66-67 buckets?

I can only answer a couple so here goes.

1)'67 did have the headrest option not sure about '66 (ok half an answer).

5) '68 Buckets have locking seat backs.

6) Knowing the '67 & '68 seat frames I'm thinking it might be a little tough to add the locks to the '67 but I've learned to never say it would be impossible, might be easier to redo a '68 seat to look like a '67?

the 66-67 seat frame and possibly the foam is different than the 68-69 so I don't see you easily interchanging them . The 66-67 has a hard plastic seat back cover that wraps around the sides some, if I remember right, where the 68-69 does not , they have a small hard board cover in the middle of the back offset to the bottom only .

I have the answer about 66 and 67 seats (at least for a-bodies).

Unfortunately, I do not have any pics, as my camera is at a friends house and I have not been able to get ahold of him...

In '66 I can not see how the headrest would work or if it was an option. the top of the seat came to a point (it was more flat in '67) and the frame has mounting blocks to hold the head rest section.

From the best I can tell the '66 and '67 use the same bottom frames and the only significant difference in the top sections is the addition of the head rest mounting stuff and some other small changes.

Again, this is for a-bodies, but I think the seats are the same.

Also the back of the seat metal trim is the same 66 - 67 but the bottom trim is slightly different it sits higher or lower on the seat.

And I think the "metal" back piece (not the trim) is the same for A B C bodies except the bright work is different and larger on the B bodies.

Now '68 used a soft backed seat so they might be totally different...

Thank you all VERY much for your excellent feedback!

My car is a 1966 model year Coronet 500 and it still has it's original factory installed front bucket seats, with the only non stock items being a custom set of seat covers that I had made and installed back in 1990. Since I have already had Just Dashes completely restore my seats original metal back panels and lower side covers from their original black, to the factory offered pearl white, along with having a brand new set of Legendary's 1966 factory style seat covers in pearl white and the 66-67 seat foams and other needed seat restoration supplies, it looks like I will have to pass on trying to make a set of the 68-69 seat frames work with my 66 style supplies, as they appear to be even more different from each other than I had originally thought.

Man, no headrests, no locking seat backs, no factory shoulder belts and a steering column that looks to be built to spear you in the chest in a collision! Safety has come a LONG way since 1966!

By the way, does anybody have some pictures of a set of the 1967 bucket seats with headrests that show how the headrests are mounted into the seat backs?

Thanks again.

Richard

Heres a profile shot of a 67 A/B/C body headrest. You could order left, right or a pair. Most of the 67 headrest hardware is unique to the 67 model year.

Thank you! Wow, the 67 headrests are totally different from the 68 -70 B-Body headrests! Would you have any pictures of the internal headrest mounting areas on the 67 bucket seats so I could compare them to my 66 buckets? Here's a picture that I found of the seat back / headrest mounting area on a 68-69 style bucket seat.
