I have nice original wheel well moldings for my Cuda'- but they have been scratched by a DA. I want to remove the anodizing and polish them. Is there a easy way to move the anodizing? Thanks

household drain cleaner (powdered) with lye in it. make in into a paste with little water and rub on your part wear gloves let it set a few minutes and wash off with cool water. repeat if the anodizing has not come off completely. then just polish them

Cheap spray can dollar store oven cleaner and a SOS pad. Must be lye in it too.

Would that be a good cost effective way to referbish the front grill trim on my 73 Challenger. A new piece of trim is $200 and it would cost the same to get it re-anodized. Would it be cheaper to remove the anodixing and have it polished? It's a pretty flimsy piece when NOT installed on the car.

look at my headlight bezel above, it cost $3.50 to do both bezels and some grill trim. I think it's worth it and it save me the cost and time involved of sending them out to be redone. I didn't redip mine but you could clear coat them or send them out to be reanodized

If you strip with lye, buff, then send out for anodizing, you most likely will be very disappointed with the results.
Let a professional aluminum anodizing shop strip the coating.

Please elaborate. I'm thinking about buffing the heck out of them, after stripping the anodizing, and then either leaving them bare-and expecting to have to polish them on occasion, or clearing them after polishing. What problems are you thinking I'm going to have?

I think he just mean some lye might get stuck in small pits in the trim or buffing compound also which would one make the new anodizing not stick well or just make it look bad if your going to leave them bare and polish them then you'll be fine

lye can create pits and make the ones already in the metal worse. while the lye is working to remove the anodic coating, it is eating away at the aluminum at the bottom of pits/scratches. lye also does not 'know' when to stop etching- it can easily mess up an otherwise decent part.

Anodizing doesn't 'stick'. it is an oxide that grows out of the aluminum in a controlled environment(anodizing tank), not an applied coating like paint, plating, etc.

Come on, nothing from Eastwood or anything else for that matter is proper or correct....just ask the experts trying to keep there business running....but some like to know about other methods, soruces, ect....for nice clean drivers is it needed to send off parts and a big handful of $$$$$

FYI- I was explaining the main reason not to strip w/lye IF one plans to anodize or that it might be a possibility for ones parts in the future. Not 'send your parts to me to support my business'. Trying to share some experience.

FWIW I do not have an anodizing line much less a strip tank. I have to take parts to an anodizer to have them stripped, just like anyone else that chooses to process their parts in this manner.
Besides, the place i take parts to for stripping is so reasonably priced, i wouldn't use lye if it didn't cause surface problems. And guess what? the customer pays exactly what i do for stripping.

Uncalled for... Mark is just trying to relay what he knows. There is a right way to do this and then there are other ways. Sure, those guys have an interest in the matter, but he didn't come at it that way.

BTW, here's the tail trim panel Mark did for me. Absolutely astonishing. Treated me with nothing but respect and really came across as a nice dude, not just blowing smoke.

So what does you posting a pic of a high $$$ restored part do???? Push his service?

Ive seen many show winning cars with polished trim cleaned, prepped as listed above, so I guess they were not doing it the "right" way....

So I guess "right" has a specific dollar value attached to it, huh???? OK, I get it.

Sure the high end road is nice, but how many cars in todays econ are being sold at a profit?

So dont get all bent up just because jimmy bo jangles dont want to dump alot in his 318 car.

But this is moparts,where alot of the really skilled people are banned or just fed up.

Well, not that it didn't look good, go for it if you want... but it still isn't the "right" way by definition. For a lower end car, this may be the right way to go, but it still isn't the "right" way.
