I have a Holley HP 150 gph fuel pump installed in the Cuda. After running for about 30 to 45 minutes the pump appears to fail; i.e. no noise, no fuel pressure. The next day the pump runs "normal" again. All electric connections ohm out good. Power to the pump does not appear to be an issue.

The fuel system consists of 1/2" pickup in stock tank. #10 fuel line to 100 micron filter, #8 line to the pump forward to 10 micron filter, then to the Holley regulator supplied with the pump. The pump is mounted on the passenger frame rail to avoid the suspension, diff, sway bar and 3" exhaust. Thus, the inlet/outlet of the pump are at about the midway point of the fuel tank, rather than below the lowest point of the tank. The pump is about 3" away from the exhaust.

Holley Tech blames the intermittent failure on the pump being too high; i.e. inlet/outlet should be below the bottom of the tank. The theory is that the pump is cavitating from sucking too hard, heating up and shutting down on thermal overload. When the pump cools, it runs again. Holley recommends lowering the pump.

Does this make sense or am I missing something ?

I would follow Holleys advise first. Then when it overheats again you can send it back to them. The rest of your system seems right but your also pushing allot of fuel so that can over work it also and those pumps are more for race car than street and are not intended for long running street aplications. The other thing that would help the little pump would be to put a return line from the regulator back to the tank that way the pump isnt pushing against the regulator all the time

I think that pump is rated for continous duty, so it should not overheat in a 45 minute time frame

Yes, the Holley HP pump is rated for continuous duty. The regulator that comes with the pump is not a bypass style regulator. Holley Tech did not seem concerned about the deadhead regulator as a cause of the problem.

Put a amp probe on it, if it starts out good and the source volts are good then the amps start to climb wile the volts are still good send it back for a motor

I had the same problem, after a few weeks of street driving the fuel pressure would fluctuate real bad. I took the bypass plunger out and sanded it down, it worked for few days then back to the same thing.
Those fuel pumps are JUNK. I returned it for a Mallory and couldn't be happier.

I think you may have a problem with the pump being too close to the exhaust. You may have a problem with vapor lock. You can try putting some heat insulation around the exhaust pipe where it is near the pump, and even wrap some around the pump. I had the same problem and this worked for me.
