Changed the heads and intake on my '74 Duster and now that it is all back together I have no spark. The only wires I un-hooked during the head & intake swap were the battery, alternator, starter, and electronic dist. plug. Everything is back together correctly but the car just rolls over and doesn't fire. Everything checked out with a test light except I have no power coming out of the dist. The dist. was un-plugged and used a jumper wire on the plug coming out of the ignition box, when that was done got spark out of the coil wire. I have no spark out of the cap or plug wires.

There is spark out of the coil if the dist. is un-plugged and a jumper wire is run into the plug that comes from the ignition box. But if we have the dist. plugged in and we turn the key inside the car there is no spark out of the coil wire.

Did you havee the cap and rotor off the distrbuter? Be sure the rotor is turning while the engine is cranking.

Checked all the bulk head connections, took them all off and made sure the were tight. Put on a new ballast, coil, ECU, and dist. still no spark.

What Stumpy said & it may just be a coincidence that the dist pickup died right in the middle of this. Do you have another parts dist that you can plug in & spin it by hand & see if that gives you fire. With your VOM see if you have continuity at the pickup

That only leaves the wiring. Do you have or can borrow a VOM & see if the coil positive and the ECU are getting near battery voltage when cranking. The "point" of the pentastar connector on the ECU is the 12V input.

Did you clean the mounting area for the ECU to ensure a good ground?

I want my fair share

Yeah, everything is grounded real well. What about the ignition switch wiring? There is no spark out of the coil when trying to start the car by the switch, but if the dist. is un-plugged and put a jumper wire in the plug that goes to the ingnition box then we'll get saprk out of the coil.

First thing to check is there fire at the coil positiuve while cranking normally.

Hello:
What is your point gap or dwell angle?

I will have to check, what should I be looking for if there isn't?

Here is the basic wiring diagram for tracing the circuits. It should make trouble shooting pretty easy. http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/elec/3.html

Start at the bulkhead & see if you have fire there while someone turns the key to start(if your starter is cranking OK you can temporarily take off the brown wire at the starter relay to disable it until you get the ign problem solved) and if no fire at the specific bulkhead terminal(both sides) go backwards to the ign sw & if you do trace forward towards the coil & check each connection

Just checked and I do have fire on the positive side of coil while cranking.

Then it's either the pick up in the distributor or a bad ECU. Check the relucter gap and see that it's about .008 using a plastic or brass feeler gauge.

I put a brand new ecu box on it and I was told that you should have power on the - side of the coil that pulseates as you are cranking the car over or while it is running and I dont have any power at all on that side.

Hello:
Check the gap as above and tell us what it is..Improper gap Points type or electronic will not allow the magnetic field in the coil to collapse resultating in no spark.

i did some more testing on the car last night and if I unplug the ditributor and put a jumper wire in the plug coming from the ecu box i get power from the positive side of the coil while cranking and I also get power from the negative side that pulsates while cranking and I also get spark out of the coil wire. If I plug the distributer back in and turn the engine over I only get spark from the positve side of the coil and nothing from the coil wire or the negative side. does this mean that the pickup in the distributer is bad? I only had that distributer on the car for 30 miles since brand new and I put another distributer in it I had from another car and that does the same thing. What is the chances that I have 2 bad distributors.
