Has anyone installed their overdrive transmissions in a b-body big-block car. What modifications are needed if any? How are they for quality and tech.

It would be easiest if you called Pat yourself.
He's very easy to talk to.

I just installed the long shaft Gear venders over drive behind the 511 in BB in my 69 Super Bee. It was an easy install. No modifications were required.

Thanks for the replies.
I was looking at a complete trans and torque converter for 1500 brand new never used. Just wondering how easy is the install. And if anyone is using these overdrive trannys in their cars.

I agree 100%

Pat is awsome!!! He treated us great with out 45 rfe. He even sent us a new valve body no questions asked. Just ask him, and he will give ya the answers you need. Customer service is great, tranny is great, and eventhough they come out of canada the shipping wasnt that bad at all.

Love their stuff and Pat's service. Call them, their service is great and so are their products. I run an A500 in my '78 D100. It ran 8.50's in the 1/8th last weekend.

Yeah, Pat will give you lots of answers and send you new parts with no questions. Trouble is, his answers are frequently wrong and... why don't the original parts work?

I had heard good things about Pat (the person, not the products) and then met him at the races. Everything sounded good so I ordered a race trans and converter from him for my Dakota. A year and 3 valve bodies, 2 converters and boxes full of parts later, along with several missed points races, I finally had a trans that would actually get me out of my driveway.

His attitude changes a lot once you get fed up with his BS and get tired of swapping out parts that SHOULD have worked in the first place. Really sad part was he was in my vicinity a couple times for Division/National events and wouldn't come over to my house to see for himself what was wrong. Somehow it all became MY fault!

That the Lord for John Cope who went through the trans and made everything right! My advice is choose John or Rick Allison for your trans and you won't be disappointed.

I believe he's doing GearVendors overdrives so that will give you a rough idea what to expect. I know he was also very big on doing up the 500/518/618 transmissions so that could also be what he's referring to. I have one of Pat's 904's with a GV. The GV in an A-body car is doable but I needed to lower the cross members about 1/2" and hammer another bit of clearance out of the tunnel itself. Other larger car bodies (B,C,E) just require a small dimpling of the trans tunnel.

It's always best to call. Pat is super helpful and definitley one of the original OD tranny builders before they were the cool ticket.

rtxpres, sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience with your tranny. Sometimes there is more to a trans problem than the trans itself. The motor, the car, the build, the parts, bad luck. Everyone can have a bumb product from tiem to time. With that many parts change, it sounds like he tried to make it right. That's a lot more than most vendors and local merchants will do for anyone.

Greg

Overdrive transmissions are energy hogs. you will gain a little fuel mileage with the right cam, intake, carb but they really knock off performance.

If an OD is knocking off performance something is very wrong. GearVendors claims a loss of 1 HP through their OD. Even the marginal 0.78 OD ratio it provides saves a great deal of wear and tear on the motor RPM's, wear on the driver's nerves, and fuel. Even regular old chrysler OD while not engaged should have very little impast on the power to he driveshaft compared to their 727 and 904 counterparts. You adda bit of weight with them but that is pretty marginal performance impact on anythign but a go cart.
I like that fact that I dont' need my drive gear to go through the traps. In theory I can trap in 2nd gear with the overdrive on for an effective gear ratio of 1.21:1 instead of 1:1 which will help performance. The ratios on the 500/518 are too steep for that, but the GV sure does that trick nicely.
