As I launched, this broke. 1.40 60ft in a 2800lb truck in this heat. This is a OEM pc with spicer 7260 u-joints. All the u-joints look and feel fine. The drive line angle at the front u-joint is about 2 degress off but I would think the u-joint would have failed if that was a facor.
It also took out the tail housing of the trans. I'll have to pull the trans and check the sprag and the output shaft.
When it hit the drive shaft loop, it put some dings in the drive shaft so I will build a new drive shaft.
What should I do? Build a drive shaft with 1350s and billet yokes or use OEM parts? Thanks, Scott.

If it broke once buy good stuff the second time. Yes, 1350 u-joints and a billet yolk. Sorry to see the bad luck.

And check your over running clutch or sprage if you are running a 727 tranny.

Wll let's see--a 40yr old piece,in a car your beating on. My guess would be age and perhaps a worn trans insulator mount which allowed it to move too much?

Overkill the drivetrain. Billet yoke, SOLID 1350 joints coupled with the best driveshaft you can afford. 300 to 400 dollars spent on that will save your Trans.

Sorry to see the damage

At least you did not get hurt

I guess it's time to dig deep on these parts. I've just never seen a failer of the slip yoke before. Who do you get to build your driveshafts?
I guess I could get a driveshaft from a junk yard that takes 1350s, cut it down myself and put good u-joints and billet yokes on it. Will that be strong enough?

You can't cut it down unless you can balance it. Have a good shop build a heavy wall shaft or go with moly or alum. Most heavy duty truck shops have a drive line shop and can build custom driveshafts.

sure, cause all of those OEM driveshafts are designed to handle those huge shock loads your car is making!

Don't cut corners here.

Check a few driveshafts shops, Mark Williams, Strange, Moser, Performance Driveline, Denny's Driveshafts ect...

The casting and history of use (abuse) of 30+ year old parts can vary a lot. My car has a factory drive shaft yoke, and it is holding up, things just break. Now, my car is a pure footbrake racer, trans breaks will "break" things with less power...

Never seen a trans yoke break apart like that, i have twisted the 1350 empire yoke in my a-833 to the point of beating it off the trans with a 4lb. hammer. Old mopar yoke like yours slid right on as did a new 1350 yoke. Billet is the way to go if you can find one.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

1.40 60 ft and you want to use OEM parts ??? NO

and correct your driveline angle

OK, point taken. I'll put after market parts in it.
Correcting the drive angle will be a big job, I set it up like that on purpose. I put the motor over to the pass side about 1-1/2" for a number of reasons but everything is built around it.
I've been a best of 1.34 60ft set up just like this, guess my luck ran out.

Yes , only a matter of time , hopefully it wasn't to costly. When during the run did it break ?
