i'm just looking for some clarification on how/why certain air filter styles were used on the 383 and 440 4bbl motors.

basically, what would determine whether or not a certain car would come with the unsilenced air filter vs the single or dual snorkle air filter.

attached is a pic i took in 1986 of my friends 69 GTX engine bay.
we just assumed since it was a pretty unmolested car that this was the orginal air cleaner assy, but when i mention it to people they seem surprised that it had that style filter on it.
this was a Ca. car if that matters at all.

i'm primarily interested in knowing what this style filter came on, or was "available" on.

also, if there are differences in appearance and size of the dual snorkle filter housings for 67, 68, and 69.....that would be good to know.

pics are always helpful

CA / N95 emission cars require the silenced air cleaners

I think that had to do with the CA emissions package.

My unqualified comments...

The dual snorkel was used on the 67-69 GTX and R/T only... The exception is the smaller oval one( smaller area where the wing nut goes) went on some C bodies... A pie pan will not fit on these "C" body filters....

The 67 dual snorkel base plate has a smaller hole in it for the AFB, while the 68-69 has a 5 1/8" hole for the AVS...

68-69 upper ( the dual snorkel part) has a flat area in the front of the filter for AC. 67 has a small "dent" in front and a small "dent" in the rear..

Nicks garage has a great pic site for the different air filters....

Dwayne do you have a picture of the rear of the car ? Cali had a noise restriction and part of that was to remove the unsilenced air cleaner and turndowns instead of tips .

As far as that being a GTX R/T assembly only , that's incorrect , my 68 sport satellite 'vert with a 383-4bbl had I'm guessing the sound deadening package , I have a copy of the broadcast sheet somewhere , it had that air cleaner assembly and turndown tailpipes along wit hthe hood pad and full undercoating .

Oval like the one above with a breather tube on one snorkel and an AVS sized baseplate . It was in the trunk of the car when I bought it , thought it was supposed to have the unsilenced but after further research it was supposed to have the dual snorkel .

Dwayne,
Here is the original air cleaner for my '67
F.A.S.T. R/T. I have ordered the 3.5" K&N as we discussed......
That god-awful exhaust is now gone, today,
and the new one to be installed this week.

This is numbers matching in everyway, and
any/all items are available if you need them
for research...

Make room Harry!!!!!!!!
