Often air gets trapped in the system after putting in a new thermostat. After shutting the engine off let it cool then check coolant level - it will probably be down as the air works its way out. A couple cycles of running, cooling and topping off the coolant should get the air out.

And please turn caps off.

I'm glad Stumpy is not awake at this hour . I like caps w my failing eyesight . On to business, suspend the stat in a pot of heating water w a candy thermometer & see when it opens. I just put a 195 stat in a stock 318 when I changed intakes & it 7/8 pegged the gauge(65 Dart) on 2 sucessive days then it went back OK & has stayed there ever since & I would highly recommend drilling a 1/32" hole in it to purge the air pocket out of there, yesterday a poster had an overheating problem from what he could tell just from the air pocket & not being able to get all his coolant back in on the initial refill which might be the case with you
