Getting ready to pull the 440 out of my Coronet, I have a 1000lb capacity engine stand. Will that be safe to hold it? The bottom end has to come out to fix my spun bearings...Don't want to go out and see my engine on the floor. What do you think?

It should be fine but they do tend to sag a bit when a complete engine is on one. Mine is 1000lbs too, and I always put a piece of 2x4 wedged between the oil pan rail and floor to help support the front when I wasn't working on it. Probably not necessary but I felt better about it that way.

Years ago I bought an engi9ne stand rated at 1250 lbs. Had a picture of an RB with B1 heads on the box, so I figured it'd be good for my B motor. Fully dressed I could hear that stand groan (lol). I would hook my engine hoist up if I left it overnight, just to be safe. Never had an issue though and it's been 20 ears or so, I still have that stand.

I built a engine stand my senior year of hi school(78) in shop class. I didn't realize till years later how heavy duty it is. I have had many BB truck engines on it, full blown BAE hemis, and countless SB on it. I have two other store bought stands that I only use now for storage or when I have to. If you want one decent and a little taller than normal then it's not too hard to build. Here's a picture of it.

Found this picture, I made this lift plate at the same time I built the engine stand. It's been used now for I guess 30 years now, Proven and Trusted.

Not all 1000 lb engine stands are created equal. I bought a "1000 lb" stand and brought it home. I didn't like the look of it so I tested it with the dressed 318 I took out before trying a BB. As I lowered the hoist the engine just kept going down and down... the mounting plate was bending. It went back to the store right away and I bought a 1250 lb stand from WW Grainger. I'm glad to have the extra beef.

Just be careful if you try to rotate it fully dressed. I tried and it almost hit the floor , very top heavy!!!!

turning it upside down is the easy part, tring to turn it back right side up is the fun part. i remember a guy had a 460 on my stand and i wanted it so i was switching them around and put his on a cheap stand, wasnt a good idea let the lift down and unhooked the 460 and walked away for sec, then the big band as his motor tipped the stand over.
